When asked by an employee why two other employees were switching a day, I responded that one employee's husband was having a surgery. When asked about the surgery I stated " I don't Know". Another employee stated I had violated Hipaa, we were all in a department breakroom in a hospital. Did I violate Hipaa?

Confused, I don't think you violated that law. There was nothing absolutely personal in what you stated.

They said because they knew who the employee was and then knew the husband... I should not have mentioned he was having a surgery.

I don't know that you violated HIPAA - how did you learn the information?

I think you violated someone's privacy by giving out this personal information.

If you found out the husband was in the hospital by looking at his medical records, where you over his case, what did you know abut it, and how did you find out about it
