I have a friend that told me he has been stealing a lot of money from his work on several occasions. His boss questioned him about it but couldn't prove it because there was no camera where the safe was. But he is still doing it I've tried to tell him to stop or to confess but he won't. It is way over $5000 and he has never done it before. I need some help working out what punishment or how much time in jail he might get if he confesses and the same if he gets caught before I can get him to confess?

He probably won't confess but if his boss hasn't put up a hidden camera by now he must be really stupid or a glutton for punishment.
Your friend needs to wise up.

Forget about confessing, just stop doing it, end of story! Then there's no problem.

Your friend will get caught eventually, the boss is most likely biding his time and is probably setting up some sort of a trap.
He didn't become a business owner by being stupid.
If he can't control his urge to steal,he needs to seek some serious mental health treatment.

If your friend hasn't stopped stealing even after the boss found money missing, then he deserves to get caught. If you can't explain how stupid that is, then you should cut him loose as a friend. People like him will get YOU in trouble eventually. Don't let this guy pull you down. It doesn't sound like he will confess, or be willing to pay the money back, but he must stop, NOW.

Perhaps you need to tell your friend that when he does get caught and he has a record of stealing from an employer, his chances of finding work in the future will be so impaired as to make him penniless.
He better hold on to that money ,he will need it for a lawyer and then to live on when no place will hire him.

It always amazes me how people cut off their nose to spite their face by stealing because in the long run it costs more than it is worth for the most part.
