View Full Version : Furnace room venting with screens?

Again, sorry about all the posts.

I have a partitioned furnace room (gas furnace and water heater) with 2 high vents and 2 low vents built into the walls. The door to the room is louvered.

Can I use a screen door instead of the louvered door?

Reason is that the furnace room can be buggy, and my fiancée gets freaked out when she's in the adjacent room. The easy fix would be to put screening on the inside of the louvered door.

Any possible problems with that?

Nope. Shouldn't need either (door could be solid) since you have vents for the combustion air.

Do you have screens over the vents?

No, but the openings are markedly smaller. (We get big honkin' spiders in that furnace room... )

Well, why don't you put screens over the vents and keep the critters out? I am assuming that these vents are to the outside.

Oh sorry -- these are vents in the partition wall. They are the same as the louvered door, except on the interior wall into the living space.

Where the spiders coming from then? Maybe what you need is a little caulking and insecticide

Were it that easy. The furnace room is unfinished, with exposed insulation, joist bays, etc. I really shouldn't drywall it considering how much plumbing and electrical runs through that ceiling.

Seal up the exterior wall up in between the joist. Doesn't have to be pretty, just keep out the creepy crawlers.
