Using Google Search for Images, I found all of these diagrams:

switch mode power supply - Google Images (http://images.google.com/images?q=switch%20mode%20power%20supply&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi)

Unless you're well-versed in electronics construction techniques, and know about star grounding and other EMC techniques, you have little chance of getting a home-made switcher working reliably. But if you are conversant with these techniques, head on over to Linear Technology:
Linear Technology - Linear Home Page (http://www.linear.com/index.jsp)
And National Semiconductor:
Design Resources Including Online Design Tools, App Notes, Eval Boards, and Software from National Semiconductor (http://www.national.com/analog/design)
And do a search for 'switch mode', and you'll find lots of data sheets and application notes with circuit diagrams for switch-mode supplies of all sorts.
