I have a Rheem central A/C that cycles on and off too often. I can hear the compressor run, shut off, and immediately crank up again. Then it shuts off and on again, etc, etc. I am worried about too many restarts being bad for the motors.
I connected a digital thermostat some years ago and that is the only change from the original instalation.

You need to have it looked at. Usually what happens here is that the AC system is going off on low pressure. Initially the problem is cyclic like you describe and then it won't come on.

The best you can probably do is check the airflow around the unit outside and to some extent, the unit inside. e.g. make sure motors are running and the filters are clean

Airflow seems fine. I forgot to include in my first post that the system was looked at about a year ago when the fan motor was replaced. I had them clean the coils and do a PM on the system. They had to add gas after taking it all apart.
I will call and have someone check the unit out.
