View Full Version : Leaky J-Trap under kitchen sink

I was doing some work yesterday on my stinky dishwasher adjusting the hose connecting the dishwasher to my garbage disposal and in the process I banged my elbow on the J-trap under the sink and then noticed that it started to leak. The water leaks very slowly oozing out through the top of the nut that I used to connect the straight pipe to the J-trap. When the water is running through the pipes I notice no leaks it is only when I shut the water off and the trap is filled with water that the water starts coming out of the first connection in the J-trap. Hopefully that isn't too confusing. I have tried everything I can think of, readjusting the straight pipe(this actually made thing worse as the T joint started leaking), plumbers tape and still a slow very annoying leak. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am at my wits end with this plumbing problem.

Remove the "J" bend and install new rubber gaskets. Good luck, Tom

I actually just replaced all of the plumbing and gaskets under the sink within in the last 4 months so all of those parts are still in almost new condition.

It is all about aligning the pipes correcltly. Also, make sure you the washer sits in correctly and is not pinched. Any imperfection in the washer will produce a leak, too. We usually hand tight - then give it 1/4 turn with channel locks.
