I've read through the posts about other Escort speedometers, however nothing is helpful. My speedometer works up until about 30 mph, then hangs out at 85 mph. I realize it's probably the speedometer cable and have traced it and know where it is. My problem is removing the dash to get to the speedometer so I can remove and replace the cable. Does anyone have an idea of how to remove the dash?

I only paid $99 for the car to begin with (it's more fuel efficient than my Aztek) and don't want to spend a lot of money getting the books and whatnot, which are running in excess of $40. If the car died tomorrow, I'd leave it on the side of the road...

Thanks all.

I can only refer to UK Ford Escorts, so it may not apply, but there are usually 2 screws at the inside top of the pod housing the speedo etc. Take these out to reveal the instrument cluster assembly. As I recall this is held into the dash by 4 screws in the corners. Remove these and the cluster should be able to be pulled forward enough to allow you to get to the back of the speedo and pinch the cable retaining clip to release it from the speeedo. Hope this helps.
