My 99 VW Passat wasn't starting and the battery wouldn't hold a charge. It would only start when jumped. I replaced the battery and when I started it up after being replaced the car would stall after about 2 or 3 seconds. I tried numerous times and still nothing. Now if I turn the key to on, all the lights come the engine light and the battery light remain on. After trying to get it going for a little bit, now it appears that the brand new battery is dead. There is just a clicking sound when I try to start it.

. Check all under dash and under hood fuses with a test light or multi-meter:

. Check the alternator--it sounds like it may be the source of your problems. Most auto parts stores will check alternators for free. They will also recharge your new dead battery for free.

. Check for codes.

. Check for spark. If none, the Ignition Control Module may be bad.

. Check for fuel. When you turn the ignition switch to ON, do you hear the fuel pump in the gas tank run?
