I am interested in polishing my skills as a freelance writer. Where and how can I do that? Since I am studying as well, I am looking for some home based opportunity.

What sort of writer?

A good start is to approach any local newspapers, including the freesheets, and asking them if you can cover something for them regularly. It probably won't be anything glamourous, might be covering the Senior Citizens pitch and putt or the meetings of the local residents association, but it will give you experience and a lot of published writing.

One place I have found with tons of opportunities, some good and some not, is on craigslist under jobs writing/editing and also under gigs: writing. At least in my local area, there are always a lot of listings. Some are paid, some are not. Some are worth the time, others not. Some are reposted every day which is annoying, but might give you a place to look in your local area.

If you are interested in some article writing work, I may have a little information. I currently run the site EnjoyWriting, basically you write articles about things you enjoy writing about which are longer than 400 words... again, if you are interested the site is enjoywriting.weebly.com

Hi, daisycut!

In addition to the fine answers that you've already received here, you could also practice your writing skills on this site. We do have, at least a couple of people who are established, professionally published writers.

Thanks!
