2002 model Stanley(Murray) 17.5 hp riding mower very slow when placed in reverse. Moves at "snail pace". Engine seems fine. Moves forward well unless on incline then slows some. Are there adjustments on the transmission for this problem?

Hi,
Let me just preface this by saying that the "normal" lifespan of a belt is considered to be four years. An inspection of the belt is called for first. A big clue of an unhealthy belt could be that the clutch/brake pedal jumps up and down when let out.
Now on the attached drawing the adjustment is performed by removing cotter pin #8 and washer #61 from ferrule #15 on rod #4. Threading the ferrule toward the front of the machine allows more tension. Now let me point out that these are int that crescent-shaped slot in the frame on the right of the machine beneath the front of the running board/foot platform. If the ferrule is touching the rear of that slot with the pedal out, then tension is a problem. Incidentally the spring # 56 attaches to that ferrule inside of the washer and cotter pin and provides the tension.
This all said, I would hazard a guess that it is time for a new belt.
Peace,
Clarke
Imagine my chagrin when I realized I did not attach the picture!
