I have a goodman split unit modell number on the outside unit is CPKE30-18. Had this when I moved 5 years ago. Have read most negative reviews on this equipment.

The outside unit has stopped working, I do hear an electrical hum at the outside, the fan does not rotate and I have no money to have someone evaluate it.

I would like to attempt to troubleshoot to figure out if it is the compresseor or any other part of the outside unit. I notice in the electrical area there are basically two devices, a switch and a large capacitor type device.

Any help is appreciated.

Is the humming coming from the switch? We call it a contacter
Is the top of the capicitor looking normal,, meaning no swelling sides or top swollen upward,, or burned /broken wires on the post of capicitor
If all looks OK,, draw yourself a diagram of how the wires are attached to the capicitor,, after turning off all power to outside and inside units,, remove the capicitor and take to electric shop that will test the capicitor

Let us know

Turns out when I opened the unit the capacitor was swollen on top, replaced capacitor ($21.00) and it worked fine.

Saved myself a service call.

Thanks for the assistance.
