Hi everyone,
I'm really excited because I just picked up my first confederate bill today. I have spent the last few hours researching the bill, and all the different aspects of what effects it value. I'm hoping that one or two of you can confirm (or adjust) my thoughts on my "new" bill. My "bottom line" question is, how much is it worth. My research indicates 200-300.
Here is what I have learned about it so far:
Denomination: $50.00
Dated: Richmond Feb 17th 1864
Believed to be a: T-66 (although I don't really know what that means)
Vignettes - Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederate States of America is featured on the portrait in the center of the bill.
Serial Number: 53595
Manufacturer: Keating & Ball Columbia S.C.
Dimensions: 3 3/8” ; 7 ¼”
"for register" is illegible
"for treasurer": appears to be Logan or I Logan
Description:
Lithographed fifty-dollar bill printed in black on a redish network background; narrow borders on all four sides with “fifty 50 fifty 50…” Main text: “50” in seal in upper left and right corners.
“Two Years after the Ratification of a Treaty/ of Peace between the Confederate States/ and the United States/ THE CONFEDERATE/ No/ 53595 (stamped)/ STATES OF AMERICA/ Will pay to the bearer on demand/ FIFTY DOLLARS/ Richmond, Feby17th 1864/ A W
Reverse printed in green: “50” in seal at all four corners, “FIFTY” in center, and “fifty” in top and bottom border.
Indications that it is authentic:
1. My Serial number (53595) is not one of the known fake serial numbers:
5670, 5920, 14949, 24791, 25674, 59204, 61891, 70104, 72104, 77114
2.Treasurer is signed in brown ink. Fakes were signed in black ink.
3. It was sold to me by a well known reputable dealer as "authentic / non-reproduction" 50.00 bill.
