My computer works OK, but does not recognize the cd's. The Device Manager says the Registry is damaged. I do not have a backup (registry.reg) that works.

Any ideas?

Once the registry gets messed up, without any type of backup, its impossible to fix it. You can try System Restore (on XP) or backup everything you need and reformat/reinstall Windows
