View Full Version : I need to adopt my nephews.

I have two nephews, one is 28 months and the other is 13 months. Their story is like so; his mother which is my sister abandoned them since May of '09, we have not seen her or know where she went. Their father is from Honduras and he recently got deported back, he has no way of coming back, so now the babies have no one else to stay with but me or their grandma, which she can't take care of them due to financial issues.

My concern is that these children need to go to see a doctor for regular check ups, but their mother never reapplied for their insurance. I need to find out if I would be able to adopt them both and if I would get help from the government to help raise them.

Addendum:
What would be the requirements that I need to adopt them? Do I need to have a high income? Do I have to live on my own with my husband? (we live with his parents at the moment)

I hope this can help me clear my mind.

The fastest thing would be to have a guardianship assigned. Adoption is a much more involved process. Guardianship would allow you to act in all ways like a parent would without the hassle and expense of an adoption.

Adoption will require a lawyer. Guardianship will most likely involve contacting the Clerk of Courts, explaining the situation and meeting with a judge.
