I am a 34 year old woman that had an umbilical hernia reparied with mesh about 2 1/2 years ago which the doc says was due to having babies (I currently have two children). My husband and I are considering having another child but want to know what to expect with the pregnancy since having the hernia. I have an appointment with my surgeon soon, but wanted another opinion. I have spoken to my ob/gyn and he says that he thinks everything will be okay, but suggested I make an appointment with the surgeon to reconfirm. It just scares me because AFTER the surgery 2 1/2 years ago, my surgeon told me that he suggested that I do not have any more children. So, what are the consequences of getting pregnant and being pregnant with a repaired umbilical hernia?

Your question is one that would have individual answers. Therefore, I suggest you speak to your surgeon. You see, there are levels of severity in the hernia department as well as levels of severity in surgery. The type of repair, along with scar tissue, among others, will determine your ability to have more children.

Please contact your surgeon for the answer best suited for your situation.

Hi. Obviously check with your surgeon but I have a friend who had her umbilical hernia repaired a few years ago and she is currently 36 weeks pregnant. She says it is quite uncomfortable because her belly button wants to pop out but can't but other than that everything is fine.

Good luck.
