It gets boring to just play with 1 doll, one would want other dolls to play with as well.

I've always counted Barbie as one of the best gifts to get the kid of someone you don't like too much. You spend a little, make the kid happy, and force the parents to spend a small fortune buying clothes, accessories and companions. <EG>

Because it is lonely being beautiful... so buying her friends... one will prepare them for the insecurities that will develop...
