Hello I am very new here and was reading the threads and like the responses.
I recently bought a house that has 100 amp service and I want to switch it to 200 amp.
I have a detached garage that has a 200 amp panel in it and I am sure that this is not hooked up properly. I want to install all brand new from the pole to the house and garage but I am not sure what I need at the pole for a meter box and breakers. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You need to begin with consulting with your power company. Each utility has their own requirements and approved meter equipment. Check their website for a handbook of requirements. A certain meter socket may be allowed by one utility and not by another.

Once you discover what brand and type of metering is needed, then you will find a meter that has provision for two 200 amp breakers, that you can use to feed each panel.

Then you need to decide if the 200 amp feeders will be overhead or underground to the house and garage ,and size up the conductors based on distance and National Electric Code.

Without knowing this preliminary details, all we can help with is general information.
