I have a Carrier Heat pump. Currently it it on cooling the house.
The indoor unit respond to the thermostat (Honeywell programmable).
Once the set temperature os reached the indoor fan shuts of. However the outdoor fan continues to run as of yesterday, and will not shut down (unless I remove the outdoor breaker. Even if I set the thermostat to off, the outdoor unit fan continues to run.

Only last month a new circuitboard was installed in the Carrier outdoor unit.

How can I test what is wrong with thus outdoor fan? I do not wish to spend another close to 400 bucks on this old unit, but would like to have it last through this summer, prior to replacing the entire system in the fall.

Help is appreciated

It sounds like your contactor for the outside unit is stuck or the contacts are welded shut. This can happen with age. There should be a wiring diagram on the inside of the device door for the outside unit. You can also tell the part by the fact that the 240 volt power goes the contactor inside the outside unit then the wires from the otherside of the contactor go to the compressor and fan motor.

Having the same problem with my 7yr old RUUD system, just had the contactor checked and it was fine... had everything cleaned too last month.

I'm having this same problem on a Lennox unit. How big of a task is it to replace it? I just yanked it off so the fan on the unit will stop spinning.
