Aaron works part time as a salesperson for an electronics store. He earns $6.75 per hour plus a percent commission on all of his sales. Last week Aaron worked 17 hours and earned a gross income of $290.63. Find Aaron’s percent commission if his total sales for the week were $3,350. If necessary, round your answer to the nearest hundredth of a percent.

Take the simple part first. You know he worked 17 hours, at 6.75 per hour. That comes out to 114.75. Now you also know that he earned a total of 290.63. If you subtract what he made with his hourly wage from that, you get 290.63-114.75, or 175.88, Which we know was his commission (since he gets paid hourly, plus commission). If his commission was 175.88, out of a total sales of 3350, what percent of the sales was his commission?

Step 1 is Earnings = 17 x 6.75 = 114.75
Step 2 Commission = 290.63 - 114.75 = 175.88
Step 3) Commission percentage: 175.88 / 3350.00 remember they want percentage so the remaining answer remember to move the decimal when using percentage.
Let me know what you come up with.

#1 He earns $6.75 per hour plus a percent commission on all of his sales.
#2 Last week Aaron worked 17 hours and earned a gross income of $290.63.
#3 Find Aaron’s percent commission if his total sales for the week were $3,350.
1. First, do like I did and put each piece of information on a separate line. Cut out the extraneous information.
2. Look at the pieces of information. For example,
#1: Earnings = $6.25 x hours + commission x sales.
#2: hours = 17, Earnings = $290.63
#3 Sales = $3,350.00
Then create a single equation (if possible, or multiple equations if you can't) that expresses all of the facts. #1 is actually the full equation. Just say things like,
"Let H = Hours Worked"
"Let S = Sales in dollars"
etc.
