A lot of people will tell you that there are many fathers of mathematics; that Newton and Leibniz invented the calculus; that Euclid is the father of Geometry; that Surya-siddhanta and Aryabhata are the fathers of Trigonometry.

Actually, none of them are correct. I have it on good authority that a guy named Igotta Goofoff is the father of mathematics. All the high school students at my school know this.

The Father of Math is a subjective matter. But, the one given the title is Archimedes.

Archimedes was far ahead of his time. He was on the brink of developing calculus when he was murdered by a Roman soldier. That's because he used calculus-type techniques to solve problems. Especially calcualting Pi by inscribing polygons inside of a circle.

That's the story anyway.

How about the Mother of Math? Sophie Germaine?

Though she was technically a Physicist, Lise Meitner was an incredible genius.

Mmm for all we know, a man named 'gunga' living in a cave could have been adding and subtracting.
