How old can a child be left alone

Left alone? As in while their parent runs to the bank or the grocery store? Or like left alone for extended periods? I think I was about 10 when my mom started leaving me home with my little brother while she ran to the store or bank or anything that took less than a half hour or so. By the time I was about 12 or 13 that turned into disappearing for hours on end and one of the reasons for a guardianship petition I had my aunt and uncle file later was that she was neglectful... the details of the situation can really make a difference.

This will vary by state and circumstance. Can you explain what is behind the question? If we know the background we can help further.

That's a hard question. To me there is no specific age. You can leave a twelve year old home and know that their mental capacity is of an six year old. The parent really need to know their child. I personally wouldn't leave them home for a long period at all. Anything could happen. Some one could break in the house. The house could catch on fire there are a number of things that could happen. Just think really carefully before you leave them home to long. Find a neighbor that you trust that could watch them and maybe you'll barter services if you don't have the money to pay a sitter.

I started allowing my boys to stay for a short time ( 30 min or less) when they were about 10 or 11, and at 12 or 13 for a little longer. By 14 they were staying home alone while I went to work.
