Today we came inside to find that the upstairs was very warm. I felt to see if the air coming out of the registers was cold and it wasn't. As we had a storm the week before and blew a fuse in the downstairs unit, the first thing I did was go outside to check the compressors. The downstairs unit is pushing hot air out of the unit, the upstairs unit is sucking air in.

What could be causing this? Upstairs unit was cooling earlier in the day.

Sounds like you may need a new fan motor. Has it been replaced before?

Not to our knowledge. We moved into this house about a year ago. Both units were replaced, according to the folks we bought the home from about 6 years ago.

Some new motors are reversible, and during storms the windings get messed up may cause this. Did you try turning the main power off and back on?

Yes. That seemed to work for a short period. But it never started cooling. Should I shut the unit off until I can get someone to look at it?

Is the compressor running or just the fan?

Not sure. The fan is definitely running. The cooling line is not cold coming out of unit and it seems to be pushing hot air out of the registers. It just keeps getting hotter upstairs. The fan started to run in reverse again at some point, just came in from outside. I just shut the unit off again and plan to leave the inside fans running. Or should I shut everything off?

You can leave the inside run if you like. Check the capacitor outside int the unit this be your problem and cost only $35 or so.

Check to see if the wires are burnt or the top of the capacitor is swollen in any way.

Is there anyway to test the capacitor? I will probably try this in the morning. We plan to just sleep downstairs for tonight. Not like I can get a cap at this time at night. Can you purchase these at Home Depot or Lowe's or would I need an electrical supply house?

No real way to test them inlees you have there right tester, take it to a local hvac store they can test it for you. But 90% of the time if it is bad it will be swollen on top. And no I dought Lowe's or depo will have it.

Thanks for the help. I'll post if that fixed the problem, but it probably won't be until Monday. Not sure if I can find a place open tomorrow or not.
