View Full Version : Thinking about hysterectomy

I found out that I have chronic pelvic/abdominal pain due to endometriosis. I'm in pain quite often, and the only thing that seems to relieve 90% of the pain are narcotic pain killers. I'm uncomfortable most of the time, and hardly do anything active because of the pain and discomfort. I have discussed the possibility of getting a hysterectomy with my fiancé, and he wants me to get one if it will increase my health and get rid of the pain.

I know there are other options to try first, but I really don't want to be on pills for the rest of my life, and the pain comes back after a year or so anyway. I personally feel that a hysterectomy would be the best option for me. We do want to get pregnant, but I fear being pregnant and having this disease will be too much, so we've decided that we will either adopt or plan on surrogacy.

I guess what I wanted to know is how you all feel about this and what your opinion was.
Thanks so much.

If your overall health will improve with this operation, go for it. As you said you can always adopt. Just being some child's biological mother is not the same as being a real mother to a child. If your fiancé has your best interest at heart (which it sounds like he does) I would have the operation done as soon as your doctor says you are ready for it. Your whole life will change not being in pain anymore and your outlook and overall emotional health with soar knowing you are pain free and can be yourself again. Sometimes this problem cannot be reversed and this is the only answer for some women. If you wish, you could consult with another doctor to be sure that there is nothing that can be done to reverse this disease and for your own peace of mind, have another doctor look into your problem and then decide with your heart and with your fiancée what's right for you.

In the end, you need to follow your doctors opinion.

As you said, there are some other options that you can try first... some medical procedures, some more holistic procedures that work well for some women.

Some women do find that it is actually much improved after they have been pregnant.

Certainly discuss all options with your doctor, and maybe consider speaking with a homeopathic doctor as well. It is important to keep in mind that a hysterectomy does not always prevent the return of endometriosis... this possibility also needs to be discussed when looking at options for your particular situation.

A hysterecotomy can be a great option, and an appropriate one, in some situations.

Difficult decision, I know... I went through something similar last year.
