While walking down the hall last night, my shirt sleeve got caught on my White-Rodgers mercury thermostat and the plastic cover came off.

I put the cover back on, but now the temperature gauge on it is not working any more.
Is there something that I can do to fix this?

I have been unemployed for a few months now and can not afford a repairman.

It was probably damaged byond repair but you can check if the indicator is stuck. Other than that if you need a temperature indicator a cheap hanging thermostat will work as long as the thermostat itself turns off and on like normal.

I did check to see if the indicator was stuck and it is not.
I took your advise and hung a temperature indicator on the wall above what is left of the thermostat, which incidentally did turn off and on all right.
