View Full Version : Proper 4-wire wiring for Honeywell RTH230B

I just replaced an old mercury stat with this programmable Honeywell RTH230B. I have a 4 wire cable that was coming in to the mercury stat with the following colors:

Red, Blue, White, Green

I have it wired up as best I could. The heat works fine. When I try to turn the AC on, the fan turns on, but the outside AC unit does not. I have checked the breaker box outside and it is good. It worked fine just before this.

Here is a link to the installation instructions for my new stat. There is a jumper running from Rh to Rc.

A specific question: Does the Red wire go to the Rh or the Rc?

Any other info on why this is happening would be appreciated. Thanks!

Red to rh jump to rc
blue to y
white to w
and green to g

What are the potential consequences of me wrapping the red conductor simply around the uninsulated jumper wire? I could not get the red conductor into the contact because the jumper was taking up all of the space, thus I simply wrapped it around the jumper figuring it would hit both of them that way anyway.

Thanks!

Should be none inless it touches anouther wire, I know they don't leave much room for two wires

That's what I figured. I know if it touches another wire it will short. I just wasn't sure if it had to be wired primarily to the Rh or Rc or if it mattered at all. It seems to be working now.

Thanks for your help. I'd rep you if I could, but I think my account is too young.
