My havense 9 year old has a fear of thunder. I have medicated him for this three times in the last month. But now with no medication for weeks and no thunder, he wakes me up several times a night clawing at the floor, though not really in much of a panic. I tell him "no" and he stops for a minute and then starts up again. What can I do? He is a very sweet dog with no other behavior problems whatsoever.

Do you have a bed for him?
If he doesn't have a bed or cushion to sleep on maybe the floor is too hard for his old bones. Many dogs start having bone problems around 9 yrs old.
He probably got in a pattern waking up with the thunder. Maybe not letting him nap through the day could help get him to sleep through the night.

Thanks for your answer about the bed in the room, but of course the dog sleeps happily on the bed with us!

What do you mean by medicated?
How often are there storms where you are?
Growling, howling or hiding from thunder is pretty common in dogs... they don't happen everyday so they don't know what they are. Dogs are like children, I don't know many children that aren't afraid of big storms and doping them up on medication doesn't help.
