My computer has no sound and won't do any thing
Windows xp professional starts up has all icons on screen but just won't open up.

Windows XP Pro on an IBM Thinkpad?? Some of them do not have the required hardware-you need 233 mhz minimum, 300 recommended. Some of the Thinkpads (like the one I use) do not meet this requirement. You also need at least a 1.5gb hard drive. If you have the required hardware, try a reinstall or, if you can, boot up to a restore point.
