Hi,
We have a problem with our hot water making really loud knocking sounds. It happened mostly in the kitchen when the hot water is turned on making a thumping sound down the wall and the water would pulsate in time with the knocking and it has now started in the shower. It seems as though there's air in the pipes? Im not sure what's causing it or how to fix it, if anyone has any advice on how I could fix it, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Helpme09...

First thing I would have you do is to shut off the water main in the house and then open all the faucets in the home.. including the outside faucet(s).

Then you want to wait 30-60 minutes or so and let the pipes drain completely. Here, you may (or may not, of course) have AIR CHAMBERS in the walls that have filled with water over time and just need to be recharged. By draining the pipes it should displace the water from the air chambers and allow the pipes to refill with air when the water is turned back on.

These air chambers are usually only 18" pipes with caps and they act as great shock absorbers when they are filled with air. Over time air is displaced and replaced with water and issues like you have can arise.

Try this quick fix... let us know if it helps...
