I am a father of two girls aged 10 and 8. I have not seen them for 7 years. The fault is not mine the mother is psycho. Anyway I need to sign rights over to them and they say I need a lawyer. Do I need one or is there a simpler way and free perhaps to get the ball rolling?

Well since you really can't just sign your rights over, I guess you need a lawyer to explain to you that you can't just do that.

And sorry but if you don't see them, it is your fault, you go to court and get a visit order, then if the mother won't let you, you take her back to court, so basically you did not want to fight for them, so yes it is basically at least a part your fault.

And unless she has a new spouse to adopt, in most places you will still be paying child support even if you do get to sign over your rights.
