Hello Wittenmeyer:
If this is a gas water heater then you will make the adjustment at the gas valve itself. At the valve there will be a large knob that gets turned to increase or decrease the temperature... see image.
If this is an electric water heater you will need to shut the power off to the water heater at the main electrical panel (breaker marked water heater.. if lucky) and then open up the TWO access panels at the front of the water heater. Once the panels are off you will see insulation... remove that. Then you should see plastic covers covering the upper and the lower thermostats (see image of upper thermostat and upper element)... leave the plastic covers in place.
Take a flashlight and a small flat tipped screwdriver and turn the temperature up on the top thermostat as needed. Then set that same temperature n the bottom thermostat. Put all back together and then turn the breaker back on
Do not exceed 125F if there are children in the home. The temp. should be marked on the thermostats. They sell a cheap thermostat at home depot to check temperatures or perhaps you have a candy thermometer in the drawer at home... these work well, too.
Let us know if you have more questions...
