We are about to start our bathroom remodel. I really had my heart set on putting in a 60" double sink vanity cabinet in place of our current much smaller vanity. My only problem is that the new cabinet would only leave 14" total from the edge of the cabinet to the center of the toilet bowl. I have looked up the fact that code would say that it should be 18" minimum. Will 14" be too close and if so, what should I do?

Hello Porterunh:

In my area it is 15" minimum (or 30" minimum space total) for normal toilets and 18" to center for handicap toilets. 15" is tight, but works OK. 14" is really pushing it, but I have seen it done more than once or twice for sure... ;)

Also, remember that a vanity top will hang over the edge of the vanity base about 1/2" to 1". How much space is on the other side of the toilet? If it is 14" as well...I would hesitate to recommend going forward with this as presented....especially if you or any family member is large boned...;) But if over 16"-17" then you guys may be able to install an OFFSET closet flange (see image) into the toilet drain line and move the toilet drain over an 1.5 to 2" (offset flanges can offset pipe 1.5 to 2") from the vanity.

Glad to discuss more if you want...

My home was built in 1954. In my master bath the toilet has 12" from center on one side and 16" on the other. A little tight but no problems over the years. Your choice! Good luck, Tom

Don't move the toilet. Leave it where it is.
