I've had a pomapoo for about 2 yrs now- he's 5 yrs old, and pretty well behaved. Our neighbors were going to bring their 3 month old kitten to the SPCA, so we took him in instead- it is likely to be a temporary arrangement, due to my partner's allergies, until we can find a friend willing to take him permanently. We just didn't want to run the risk of him being put down if he's not adopted out soon enough.
The dog will chase the cat around the house every now and then, but not hurt him- when he catches him he just swats him with his paw, pushes him down, or flips him over with his snout. I was concerned at first, until I realized that the cat chased the dog just as much- sneaking up on him, running through the room and lunging at him, swatting at his tail- it seems to be how they enjoy playing together. I've read a lot of things that say you shouldn't allow the dog to chase the cat- but if they both seem to be having a good time, is it really that bad? Neither one seems angry, and if I separate them the cat starts meowing like crazy, and then once I put him back down with the dog, he purrs and rubs up against him before they start running around again.
They do seem to like each other and are not afraid of one another in the least. The other night, for example, the cat crawled into the dog bed, and they were both licking each other and cuddling and fell asleep together. It's just the roughhousing during the day that I want to make sure is okay to allow.
Any input from people who currently have a cat and dog living together would be appreciated.
Thanks!
