When my father died, my brother and I went around town paying all due bills. Nothing huge, just the usual, because he would want all outstanding debts to be taken care of. However, depending on the family, and their situation , this is a tough phone call to make. But business is business. Maybe you can throw in a break. Good luck, and GOD bless the family.

Is the family responsible for the rent when a tenant dies?Hello tall:
No. His estate is responsible for his bills. If there's no estate, the bills don't get paid.

Are you the landlord or a part lf the decedent's family? Was there a lease and, if so, what was the remaining term?
The reason I ask is that the landlord should immediately contact the family and determine who is administering the estate and what the administrator intends to do with the leasehold. The administrator also needs to decide what to do with the place, and the personal possessions in it.

If a person who lived alone dies then the lease is automatically terminated. The heirs can be given time to remove the possessions, but the estate will be responsible for paying rent until that's done.
IUf the family doesn't want any of the possession the landlord can dispose of them and charge the costs against the security. He can charge the estate for any other costs.
But the family would not be responsible out of their own pocket.
