Hey Garrett:

You may be better off to cut into the lavatory drain (sink drain). This way you can use the lavatory vent as a vent for the shower drain. This is only possible if the lavatory drain and vent are 2" pipe.

If you can't connect into the sink drain and can only connect into the toilet drain then you will need to plan on installing an 1.5" vent for the shower as well as running 2" pipe and ptrap for the shower drain.

Finally, to connect into copper pipe you can use SHIELDED CLAMPS... these are transition clamps that can get you from copper pipe to PVC... just need to order correctly... see image. Here, purchase a PVC WYE fitting and install 4" pieces of pipe into each end of the fitting, lay the fitting on the pipe and mark both ends of the pipe. Then add a 1/4" to each end and make your cuts. Then use the shielded clamps to insert the PVC WYE fitting into the copper drain line.

Let me know if you have more questions...
