Hi Frank:

The manufacturer of the particular shower base you purchase will have the best instructions on how to set their particular base so be sure to read all of the instructions provided before proceeding with the installation. For example, some companies require the pan to be set in a bedding substrate, such as structolite perlited gypsum plaster (or similar product) and others require that you don't set the pan in a bedding substrate. In fact, if you do it voids warranty, so read instructions.

The subfloor/floor will need to be structurally strong for good result here.

The 2" shower PTRAP will need to line up directly under the drain hole in the shower pan and the pipe will hook to a shower strainer... you can use a socket weld (first pic.) or a No-calk drain (2nd and 3rd image... both are same.. different materials)... I am a fan of the no-calk strainer for home owners to install.

Once you have determined the correct location for the trap and the pan, you will pour 3-4" of the bedding substrate in the footprint of the shower pan (if required) and then set the pan being sure to level the pan from front to back and from left to right. If you use the no-calk strainer you can leave the 2" drain pipe long and cut it down later using an inside pipe cutter (3rd image... install rag into pipe before doing this).

That is basic breakdown... let me know if you have more questions...
