Hello to All,

I have a 1986 Ford Bronco II with the 2.9 fuel injected engine, it turns over okay, and I can hear the fuel pump running also, but it won't fire, This was an intermittent problem, but as of yesterday it won't start at all.

Sometimes it will catch and run a little but very rough and then die's again. I have not checked for fire at the plugs, but by it running a little I'm assuming there is fire.

The gas tank is over half full, and the battery is fully charged.

I under stand there is two fuel pumps on this vehicle, should you be able to hear both of them come on and run for a short time? I know one is in the tank, where is the other located?

Could an electronic module be the problem?

Has any one else had this problem with this year, make, and model vehicle?

What would be a good sequence of trouble shooting?

Thank you for your time!

Intake, compression, fire and exhaust all need to occure in the proper sequence, with sufficient force.
Some of one and not enough of another makes any car not run well.
If you think fuel isn't a problem, you have got to consider lack of sufficient spark next. The coil could be so weak that it could fire some of the time, yet not other times. Or it could be worn plugs and tired ignition wires.
What does the maintanance schedule look like for this vehicle? All the normal services complete?

If you don't know when the last time was, change the spark plugs, and/or wires, to what the manufacturer recommends for your engine. If you still don't have good results, you may eventually need to replace the ignition coil and/or ignition module.
More diagnostics could rule out a couple of things.
Let us know.

Thank you Captain Rich for your response to my question.

I found the problem to be a bad ground to the high pressure fuel pump which is mounted to the rail under the drivers seat.

I mentioned I could hear a pump running, it turned out to be the pump in the tank I was hearing.

The bronc is running fine now!

Thanks a million
