I just had new carpet replaced the old carpet in the entire house which is much thicker than before. But now it causes the opening & closing of doors to be very difficult. So are there any thricks to this or do I have to actually shave down every door (5) or can I just shimmy the door jambs somehow - I just need abour 1/4 " - any ideas.

Thanks I
Linda

Hi ifsayer

Have to cut the bottom of doors. If door is binding, need to cut off more then 1/4''

With door in closed position, lay pencil on carpet and mark door. That will give u clearance needed to operate without wearing carpet.

Good luck

Before you pencil the door tape wrap the bottom face edge all the way around the door with a good masking tape. Pencil mark the tape for location of cut. Use a plywood blade to cut the bottom.

The tape helps the wood fibers from lifting when the cut is made. After the cut is made take a sanding block and lightly sand the bottom door edge at a 45 degree or less.

This also tightens up the grain on the bottom edge so if you snag something on the door bottom it won't splinter or peel up the face of the door

Hopefully the doors there weren't undercut before. Newer doors doesn't have as much solid wood plug/rail up /inside the door
