Curiosity getting the better of me, I decided to try growing an upside down tomato plant, and being frugal, I made a planter out of a five gallon bucket It isn't as fancy, but why spend $20 if you have the parts?.

It has been outside for two weeks now, and is getting stronger, but there is one thing that I noticed; The main stem/stalk/trunk of the plant has started growing up, and I am assuming that after it sets fruit and they begin to grow, the stalk will grow downwards.

Which leads me to this thought/questions:
If the stalk is growing up, even though it is facing down, are the roots growing down, even though they are facing up?? Sounds almost like a paradox.

Would this add stress to the plant?

I also decided to put it up on an old pool deck, so if it starts to really grow I'll have enough support to just drape, and tie it around the deck.

As an ongoing project I'll update on an irregular schedule, maybe every two weeks.

I've got to say I'm glad someone has finally wondered about this on the forums. I've seen it on TV and I really was wondering. Mind you I've also seen tomato plants advertised on TV that grow to be 7 or 8 feet in height and supposabally (spelling?) yield twice the amount of tomatoes..

Please let me know if they end up growing down like they do on TV

mind you i've also seen tomato plants advertised on tv that grow to be 7 or 8 feet in height and supposabally (spelling?) yeild twice the ammount of tomatoes..I have also seen those ads, and the one thing I've noticed was the ground was well prepared for planting.
As with the Upside down Tomato (UDT) ads, I suspect they give the plant the same treatment. The ad men won't show scrawny fruit or plants...That's show bizzzz!

I could have done the same with my UDT, but opted for regular yard dirt, the only other amendment was a watering with miracle grow.

Please let me know if they end up growing down like they do on tvYou betcha!
To be realistic , I really think they will, you get a few of those 8 to 12oz more? fruits on there, and she's got to go down!

Let's see... the 4th of July is on a Saturday this year, so look for a post every Friday, and we'll see if there are ripe Toms by the Fourth.
That's pushin' it with 67 days, but it might happen.
And that's okay, I like green fried too... KUXJ

I spent the 20 bucks 3 years ago.:)
My first year was un-successful, but I think it wasn't in a great area. Since the weight on the whole thing was amazing I didn't know where to put it.

The second year I moved it and only put cherry tomatoes in it, which grew just fine for a while, but then... I believe didn't get enough sun because of a large Pompas (?) grass I had growing.

This year it's 3 strikes your out! I moved it again and made a make shift holder on my fence in a very sunny location with a drip system in it next to the rest of my tomatoes and it seems to be doing very well so far. Growing up. It only has about 3 feet to hit the ground, so I'm not sure what to do after it starts producing.

I attempted to put a picture, but it was too big,:( I will try again tomorrow and keep updating.:)

Looking forward to other updates.:)

I didn't plan on getting so detailed, but by my calculations...
Planted on May 2nd (bought at Lowes)

It may be a San Francisco Fog or a Better Boy. I experiment with different ones every year, but since it's in the upside down thing there was no dirt to bury the tag.

Second pic I have flowers! We are going to be in the 101-105' this weekend, so I will have to keep watch.

The flowers are in the middle (kind of) if you can't see them) they are yellow! Ha ha

No info on the label, all it says is 'PRIZE WINNER' San Francisco fog. I think it might be smaller toms, not like cherry but also not like Beef Steak. All the leaves look a like, so the second contestant will be the 'Mystery Tomato' I Love Tomatoes! :D

Good, tennis ball is good!:)
I have 2 Super Steak
2 Early Girl
2 Mama Mia
2 Big Beef
1 San Fransico Fog
1 Mystery
I went on the sites you suggested and then studied the leaves and nothing clicked:(
I did happen to notice that the hanging one is not as large as the others due to lack of fertilizer (I think) the other have tom spikes for them. I have a batch of chicken compost tea that I watered it with, maybe that will help. If not I will go with the Miracle grow. I think once the leaves get a little greener and bigger I might be able to identify it.

Well at 4:50am edt, it hit 36° here. As I write (4:44pm edt), its 74° > 45° tonight.

With just the Dear Wife and me, we don't require many plants, I find it helpful to have toms, peppers, onions, parsley, and zucchini/squash available over winter, I love cooking!

The smaller containers they sell for the UDTs was a concern of mine, as far as water and nutrient demands go. I can see money out the window every time there's a drip from one of the drain holes.
For now, I'm sticking with every two weeks for "tea"

Wait till you see my Friday pix, "better boy" really pushed and its getting a lot darker.

Best shot I have for S.F. Fog

I'm looking forward to them and the others.

It's just me and my husband here also, but I can 'can' tomatoes and or freeze for sauces. I always plant extra, in case some don't produce much.

I'm originally from Chicago area, and all you had to do was put a plant in the ground anywhere. It's different here. Once a few years back I had so many toms I was giving them to all the neighbors, but now with the weather change I only get enough for us to enjoy.

I try something different ever year.:)

I don't have a lot of room, so the only other thing I have planted are some bush beans and pole beans, and of course Basil and Dill. Oregano, Thyme and Marjoram grow all year round here.

News Update from the 'ol Oaken bucket. Or should I say plastic?:

Measured “Better Boy” (BB) Friday 22nd, and came up with 21”, a gain of 4” since Friday last.
Measured again after the storm, Sun. 24th, and had 26”.
The blossoms are an inch long now, and there seems to be a “BB” sized object enveloped in their petals.

My, My, You can almost hear it grow...

The weather in this neck of the woods has finally, I think started to turn to the better for gardening, instead of a Winter/Spring climate, we are over the hump, and heading towards a Spring/Summer environment.

This weeks day temps staid pretty steady in the mid 80's with night's 'round lower 60's, no rain though till this evening 24th when a small storm went though 'bout 7:30pm edt , sporadic brilliant lighting, with sharp crackly thunder The kind that sends chills down your back, dropped a half inch of rain in 10 minutes, not much wind though.

Memorial Day's calling for upper 70's... Rest of the week to be mid to upper 70's, lows to lower 60's... Chance of rain/scattered showers/T-storms 60%

BB is getting his minimum of 6 hours of sun, and I've been thinking/figuring, a way of making an automatic drip watering system to help with the water requirements.

After reading 'bout blossom end rot on zucchini, being a calcium deficiency, I placed some crushed egg shells from one of my breakfast's on the top of the dirt in the bucket... figured it couldn't hurt, eh?

Did have a slight scare though this evening. When I went to check on BB after the storm... Instead of growing upright near the bottom rim of the bucket, he was hanging down, and at first I thought the stem had broken during the downpour, but after giving him the once-over, the stem and blossoms look okay... Just received a Heavenly nudge is all.;)

Mine doesn't seem to be growing as fast as my other plants, so I might start watering daily by hand with some Miracle grow or I might shove a tom spike in the top of it. I think all my nutrients are dripping out the bottom. It is turning greener though and I do have additional flowers. I'll take a picture in about a week, it doesn't look that different right now.:(

Edit. We had great cool weather over the weekend 70-80's, but today back to 100' and mid 90's for the rest of the week. I'll have to keep a close eye on all of them.

News from the Bucket:

I hope this cloudy/rainy weather is almost over, because it sure has slowed Better Boys (BB) growth... Its also exposed a health concern, see pix.

I'm not sure which type of spot it might even be a canker BB has contracted, it's either Bacterial or Septoria Leaf Spot. I used this link Key for Identifying Vegetable Diseases (http://foxyurl.com/4on) to try and narrow it down.

The link has two areas; one covers pickles to squash, the other tomatoes. Click on which variety your concerned about, then after that its self-explanatory. To view a larger pix, click on the link in the Disease column.

If anyone wants to help ID my problem I'd appreciate it. I'm leaning towards Bacterial Canker. With any of these it means the dirt I used was already infected. The only ways I know of, to control that, would be to either buy sterilized dirt or make your own by cooking it in the oven.

Ahhh... The Sun has finally come out. After last weeks forecast, I thought we'd see the Sun more than what we have. This'll be the first direct Sun BB has seen for the last four days, and it shows in the tape measurement I made today. Only two inches in vertical growth Now 28”, but four in horizontal, It was more vertical after the storm on the 24th, but as you can see it's starting to go sky-ward again. See pix. BTW I corrected the date stamp.

Today marks 31days for this un-scientific experiment, and even with the leaf problem, the flowers look okay, and there are two more fruit stems. Hopefully I'll start seeing actual fruit in 10? More days.

With last night's storm, and this afternoon's we've received 2.8", total for week > 3.7" Officially for week > 0.54"

It's really hard to tell! Has it changed much in the last week? Is it wilting more?:(

KUXJ
May 31, 2009, 08:14 PM
Hi Just Dahlia! :)

If by change, you mean more diseased leaves, no, and I don't notice any wilt elsewhere on BB. At least not yet!

What I do notice though, is a preponderance of red mites, and very small 2 to 3 mm hard exoskeleton insects a primer gray color with dark spots, kind of remind me of potato weevils, but if I remember correctly they have stripes.
No matter though, they all have sucking mouth parts.

I still feel it's related to all the rain we've been getting, once it slows down to once or twice a week instead of four or five days of drizzle/rain/downpour/drizzle/downpour/rain/rain... Well you get the idea... The health/growth will improve, and the insects will decrease.

News from the Bucket:

I'll bet you'll never guess what its doing outside... awww... You guessed, yep its raining. :(
I guess I shouldn't complain, you don't have to shovel rain.
Rain for the week; Here 3.17 ~~~ NWS 1.96

Last Saturday to Tuesday night; Partly Sunny to Partly Cloudy.
Wicked Thunderstorms Wednesday morning 01:25am edt, lasted to 02:10am edt
Then Overcast to today. Light rain started this morning 00:20am edt, so far 1.13 ~~~ NWS 0.62.

It did dry up enough that I was able to cut grass on Thursday, knew 'bout the rain coming, and I wanted to get that elephant and his eye out'a the front lawn. The tires were running damp to wet, but the deck didn't clog too bad.
Well, enough of that.

Been a quiet week at the bucket. Haven't seen any more of the leaf spot/canker, and the rest of BB looks healthy, he grew another 1” (29”), and on one set of fruit stalk the flowers are wilting to brown, I'm hoping to see fruit soon.

Oh... I saw one of those UDT TV ads for “Topsy turvy” today, I'm still wondering why the guy has his hand “in” the plant Like he's holding something, when he picks, and hands the girl a tomato.

If I did this right, the first 2 pics are of UDT SFF (or mystery Tom)
the second 2 are of the one in the pot (thinking it is the same plant)

The tom in the pot is 3 times the size of the one in UDT, but the plant is also 3X the size.

I'm getting some yellow leaves at the bottom of the SFF and on one of my 'Big Beef' any suggestions?

I'm getting some yellow leaves at the bottom of the SFF and on one of my 'Big Beef' any suggestions? :confused:Hi! Just Dahlia,
There are different types of yellowing including old age, but what I see in the one with the support cage looks like a nitrogen deficiency-95% sure... maybe sulfur-5%.
There isn't enough upper leave growth to cause enough shade to the lower ones to be "death by old age".

The UDT might be in the same predicament, and I'm also concerned 'bout the plant to the right that has the leaf curl. That could be a copper deficiency 97%... maybe Boron 3%; although some plants have the characteristic that makes them curl.

When's the last time you used fertilizer? Your weather has been much warmer/hotter lately, and that can add a lot of stress to plants.
I wouldn't go to strong. Depending on how many plants you have make up a gallon or two of miracle grow or something similar, and dole it out to all your plants,
I say miracle grow because I know it has all of those trace elements in it.

Use this link, Plant Physiology Online: Symptoms of Deficiency In Essential Minerals (http://foxyurl.com/5ma), for identification.
It's a little technical in the beginning, but gets easier 'bout a third of the way down.

And don't forget those breakfast eggshells, just crush 'em up in your hand, and lay 'em on top ;)

I read and I read and I read, I think I understood most.

I agree with your conclusions and just fertilized with Miracle Grow for Toms (just happened to have some) it is old though, do you think it's still good?

Either way I will watch them more closely. I think I will have to fertilize the UDT every 2 weeks, because everything goes out the bottom.

I did put spikes in all the plants when I planted, but I have them on a drip system, so maybe the spikes aren't getting wet.

Thanks for the advice, well see what happens next.

I'm really surprised others haven't popped in with advice or pictures. I guess we are the only tomato lovers.

Now, Now... Don't be discouraged. There are times when I read an article on one of my other interest's, say... Cosmology, I may go over a sentence, paragraph or chapter several times in order to fully understand it.
Have you ever heard of the “Grandfather Paradox”?

Religion is another interest, I've just started to read “The People of the Creed” by Anthony E. Giles. It is a story behind the early Church from 95 A.D. To 600A.D.

Okay!

According to the Scott's site, MG will last indefinitely, but I suspect that if you found some after 10 years it could go either way. Some elements/compounds get stronger with age, some weaker.
A word of advice. MG is slightly acidic so using it on toms, and other acid loving vegetable plants is okay, but not most houseplants. If you really need acid get Miracid.

What type of bottom does your UDT bag have? Porous fabric? Plastic with holes? Can you save it with a drip pan?

Or maybe your spikes weren't getting wet enough, and the solution was evaporating before it was doing any good. That would lead me to believe that you may still have food for the plant in the container, but it just hasn't propagated to the rest of it.

So am I, there was binx44 in the beginning, but so far its been just you, and me. I do notice the views jump by 5 or 10 almost every day, so the interest is there. I want to be careful on how many attachments (pix) I download, so I don't go over the limit.I'll have to check the rules on that

BTW... Just since last Friday, BB has grown 5" vertical (34"), and 4" horizontal, but still no fruit :( Its amazing what a few days of Sun can do! :)

I don't think there is any overall limit to pictures. I've been on other threads with 1000's of pictures. "Pics of our members, pets, artwork, etc.
I believe you can only put 4 per post though.

I think my one plant and another are not getting better, the ones with the leaf curl. I am going to Southern Ill. This weekend for a family reunion, so I can't watch them. Do you think I should move them away from the healthier ones?

All have toms though. :)

I think my one plant and another are not getting better, the ones with the leaf curl. I am going to Southern Ill. this weekend for a family reunion, so I can't watch them. Do you think I should move them away from the healthier ones?

All have toms though. :)

Three main reasons for leaf curl...
*environmental stress... We know they've been under stress, The hot weather.
*herbicide damage... We know You try to be as organic as possible What'a 'bout your neighbors herbicide use
-for lawn care?
*viral infection... We don't know if you've checked for virus's or fungi, or bugs.

For tomato mosaic virus, symptoms of this virus include Curl, mottled leaves and smaller than normal leaflets.

Tomato yellow leaf curl virus is transmitted by sap-sucking insects  and causes leaf roll symptoms in infected tomato plants. Purplish veins on the leaf underside will help to distinguish this virus from environmental leaf roll and herbicide injury. Once it gets this though, the plant is usually a goner. :(

If you don't see bugs like aphids or otherwise damaged leaves, they should be okay.
For the environment check the weather forcast's.
One thing that is impossible to control is herbicide drift from your neighbors.

:) When in doubt, move 'em out! :)

News from the Bucket, June 13th, 2009:

SOME OF THE THUNDERSTORMS COULD BECOME STRONG...PRODUCING SMALL HAIL...BRIEF GUSTY WINDS AND FREQUENT LIGHTNING. Its 80.3°F at 1:1:28pm edt
Rain this week ending 061209; 2.13 ~~~ NWS 1.85

BB's doing well, considering the lack of direct sunlight. He's 38” vertical, and 34 horizontal, sent along three pix, two of them are back when, and now shots for comparison. The main stem is the longest, and I started to train the one on the right to go to the right, there is one on the left, but it's smaller, and towards the back.

He's getting a lot of fruit stems, but Still no fruit! :( . The first stem to get flowers has its blossoms 'bout ready to fall off, and I don't want to resort to strong chemicals. Except for the yard dirt and an initial dose of MG, I've left it on its own. Anyone's welcome to chime in, if I come up with something I'll let you know.

Wait... back when I first hung it the temps where mid 50's or above, then we had that cold spell where it got down in the 30's hmmm, I wonder..

Well I got to get goin' chores you know... I have a new project this week, replacing an old basement window an puttin' in glass block, with a covered well on the outside.

Yours seem to be doing decent dahlia... sometimes nature is just hateful and causes problems when it wants to lol.. you've got some small ones growingh on your plant don't you... there also could be quite the geographic difference between you and them and a temp difference etc so that could be why yours are not growing nor acting the same?

I've got the Topsy Turvy and the five gallon bucket ones, and they both are doing great! I've got mine hung up high, probably 8 feet up, to get them away from the deer on our property. The rest of our garden is inside of a 9 foot high electric fence. (The deer eat our azaleas in our front flower bed). I'm wondering how far down they grow too, but am pleased so far. I couldn't find the T-T ones quick enough, so I made them out of the buckets. I cut the hole like yours too, but I cut two holes on each bucket and am growing two plants in each one.Good luck and happy gardening!

It has only been found in the determinate variety.

I don't know what the big deal is about these 'upside down' tomatoe plants and as a gardener could care less about them. They sell them at our nurseries dirt cheap already in a plastic bag, with the tomatoe plants already started and growing. I don't buy them.

I had a farm for many years so know what is is like to plant MANY tomatoe plants of different varieties.

They are basically used by patio gardeners with no space to grow the in ground tomatoe plants.

One cannot get the good beefy beefsteak out of a tomatoe plant like this; so what's the point ?

Everybody has their own opinion about these. They can be used anywhere regardless of how much room you have, and ANY variety can be grown, even cucumbers. One huge draw is that you don't have to stake them. They do grow quicker too. I've got these and the basket style too. Oh well, good luck to all. Don't forget about the fried green tomato!

I had a lot of fun measuring these plants, I really need to get a life:eek:
This is all from right to left. (think Hebrew)

33" x 1' Super Steak in ground all alone by the beans. No toms yet
32" x 1'1" Early Girl w/toms. some leaf curl (slight)
37 x 2'3" Early Girl w/toms
32 x 2' Mamma Mia w/toms
25' x 1 1/2' Mama Mia w/toms (in a pot) the one with the crazy leaf curl!
27" x 10" UDT w/toms
4' x 2' Big Beef w/toms (little curly) maybe dry:confused:
Then a dwarf Tangerine tree
3 1/2' x 2' Big Beef w/toms (has a little shade) behind a bunch of flowers
4' x 2' Super Steak w/toms (has a little shade) behind a bunch of flowers
4' x 2' San Francisco Fog w/toms in pot) think U-Turn and then almost in front of the UDT.

So... that's my line up:cool: I plan to make Salsa and eat raw. I bought a Monster Pressure Cooker on EBAY for half the price at the stores and am reading ALL the instructions, so nothing blows up.

I didn't know there was a genetic mutation with tomato plants causing the weird leaf curl. I assumed maybe that with the big location difference maybe it was humidity or some insect that you KU didn't have at your location.

Out of all the plants do you think the hybreds are doing better gowing upside down, the other breeds/types or do you think they are all growing in equal quality (though I guess that might play a lot on variety)

I didn't know what type of reaction I would get when I put that in there, besides, its not polite for a Gentleman to inquire of a Ladies age.

I didnt know there was a genetic mutation with tomato plants causing the weird leaf curl. I assumed maybe that with the big location difference maybe it was humidity or some insect that you KU didnt have at your location. That's what I thought.. ”weird leaf curl” it really didn't look like a environment/pest/disease characteristic. I can't think of it now, but it reminded me of a type of pasta, JD can call it “Pasta Tom”. I hope she tries the seed for next year.

Out of all the plants do you think the hybreds are doing better gowing upside down, the other breeds/types or do you think they are all growing in equal quality (though i guess that might play alot on variety)
Good question! At this point I would say equal.

Just Dahlia reported worse in comparison to hers... Standard UDT package.
jmjoseph reported the same or better in comparison to mine... 5gal bucket.

That's why I said earlier 'bout my theory; The larger container is giving better results.

The TV ads might be right, the other day we were in the blue big box, and I saw a 3gal. Container with a tom plant in it that already had tennis ball size fruit. Normal orientation

News from the Bucket...

BB's new progeny are doing well have 'bout doubled in size to 1¼” in a weeks time, and there is one more starting to push on the same stem.
I've 'bout given up on the original fruit stem, it still looks healthy, but no fruit.

I'd have to check the growth record for last week I believe it was 38”vertical, but vertical this week is 46”, and horizontal is 34”. I have 17” to go before BB starts scraping the ground at which point I'll start draping him around the deck.
With this being the pilot season, and no previous information to go on I do not know if 8” of growth in seven days can be normal or not.

The only change this week was the weather, not as much rain, and a tad more Sun.
For once this season both reporting stations are in close agreement:
BBX... 1.00” NWS 0.98”.
Tonight into Sunday afternoon there is a system coming in from the Mid-West that could double that. Then seasonal the rest of the week. H81° L61°

Taken from the NWS:
Saturday: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain and frequent lightning. High near 81. Light wind becoming west between 13 and 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Hope it doesn't ruin Father's Day for any of you.

This week had a nice surprise, we had two new well, new to this thread Botanist's share their insight with us; jmjoseph, and tick.

jmjoseph, from that Great State of Georgia who's running his own version of the Ponderosa there. His garden is 'bout half the size of my property 70'x300'. And...

Tick, from that Great Country of Canada, from what I've been able to gather she has worked in Landscaping.
I have to agree to a degree with ticks statement 'bout UDT's and all the fuss. That's what got me started the fuss. I do believe it can be a viable propagation method in some situations.

Welcome aboard jmjoseph, and Ms tick! Stop by anytime.

And, how can I ever forget the “better half” of the team. Just Dahlia, and binx44 and their insight.

JD... Change in plans.
Eddie, the pilot from Rickenbacker Air Freight told me they Will be landing in Honolulu, you'll still have to wear the 'chute.

b44... Hope your trip was okay, we're planning a bbq Sunday too. Good question last time, really made me think.

My next door neighbor bought two of those upside down planters. One kept falling off the hook in the yard due to the squirrels jumping on it. She replaced that planter with the other one on the porch after that incident. So far her tomato plants are not getting very large. Glad I didn't try that route this year.

We have the ubiquitous Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) Eastern Gray Squirrel - Wikipedia (http://foxyurl.com/6NY), and so far they are not using the pool deck as one of their routes.

My concern is the weight of the whole assembly hanging only by the handle. I've been in a few "bucket brigades" where the handle mount broke and the contents went flying.

The trend in tomatoes around here is I think called 'heritage tomatoes'. They are seeds that have been found on archeological sites around the Humber river in Toronto, anywhere pioneers settled and grew corn, root vegetables and squash tomatoes, etc.

Over the last few years they have developed new plants from these seeds and are sold at veg stands, expensive but interesting.

One question.. :D Is anyone growing both UDT and RST (regular standing tomato) at the same time in the same growth peroid and started them both at the same time? If so I think it would be intresting to see if maybe the growth cycle differs in any way at all (ie.. The meeting with my Aunt went awesome... Hubby came with me and turns out her and I have more in common with each other then with the rest of the family lol. Had plenty of rain so far this weekend and going to get more rain this week so I think I won't be able to get any gardening done.

The same amount of light, water, and soil. Even with greenhouse conditions My theory would be, “one plant will out-do an other”

Only size differs in the two, See A World Record! (http://foxyurl.com/6Oy) for “Tomato Tree” in Disney World. I seem to remember its been growing for several years... now where'd I put that link?
The best months would be one's that the average temp is above 70°F ~ 21.11°C toms love heat!

or can they be started anytime in the spring and summer (with thought to as when cold weather would set in)They can be started any time as long as the seeds are properly prepared. Tomato plants are technically a perennial even though they are treated as an annual. Under the right conditions a tomato plant will continue to grow for years.

Hey tomato ranchers, anyone have a sure fire cure for blossom-end rot? I don't mean pre-planting advice, I mean end it now ideas. Can it be stopped at this stage? Been lucky, never had it , until now. It's on one of the gravity defying ones. Thanks.

KUXJ
Jun 20, 2009, 08:03 PM
Blossom End Rot is caused by a lack of calcium.
The real problem is that the plant is unable to absorb the calcium that is in your soil due to an uneven supply of water.

It is essential to keep the soil consistently moist rather than let the soil completely dry out and then water fully. This extreme fluctuation is almost a surefire way to induce blossom end rot.

Too much nitrogen in the soil can also cause rot. In this case, a handful of lime around the base of each plant might help In your case put a little on the top.
It is important to cut back on your fertilizing or switch to a brand that has a low nitrogen and high phosphorous to high potassium ratio.

Other conditions that may bring about blossom end rot are weather-related: extreme changes from hot to cool temperatures, stress from drought, and heavy rains after a dry spell.

Mist the plants affected with milk (for the calcium), you could even pour some on the top.

I know this has been discussed on another thread, and one problem is the smell. The reason it smells is because the Pasteurizing/Homogenizing process kills all the “good” bacteria” and the milk becomes rancid.

If you can find raw milk Do you have any milkers on the “Ponderosa”? You will have better success, you'll still have a smell, (it will still sour, which is a lot different than rancid) but not as bad. Oh, and don't forget the breakfast eggshells...

Hmm and with the curious leaf curl you've cancelled out diesease, infestation, weather problems? Could just be a genetic trait passed down through generations but skipping some generations. I wonder if the UDT are growing slower because of being upsidedown or because all plants grow at their own rate regardless of genetics and species.
Aww Dahlia I'm sure you will have some soon tomatoes are my favorite veggie... (they are a veggie are they not or are they classified as a fruit. I know some plants are classed as one when you would expect them to be called the other

K : I suppose that could always be an experiment for another time... trying to recreate the same soil, sun, water ratio for each might be a little difficult if you don't have a greenhouse setup.. HMM I need a greenhouse I wonder if the hubby would let me build one :D

I'm hoping your not the one who sent the rain spirits our way.. its muggy ontop of it all which isn't any fun... humidex of 25 Celsius with rain tomorrow. ( I'm canadian I use C not F lol)

So then since in our area the average temp doesn't seem to be reaching 20 or 21 as of yet a greenhouse setup would be best... Nova scotia seems to see a lot of cool rainy or muggy rainy days here but nothing real happy so far this year just a few Hot days with some wicked nice sun... at least my hostas I replanted are doing awesome

How would you properly prepare tomato seeds for planting and if you were going to give the UTD a shot how would I go about making the bucket. Our deck is stable enough as we just built it lol :D

I did not know they were a pernennial... wow that's neat. You learn new things each morning lol

So then since in our area the average temp doesnt seem to be reaching 20 or 21 as of yet a greenhouse setup would be best... Nova scotia seems to see alot of cool rainy or muggy rainy days here but nothing real happy so far this year just a few Hot days with some wicked nice sun... at least my hostas i replanted are doing awesomeThere are T-shirts in Bar Harbor, Maine that say “we only have one month of summer, and that's august”

K,
Thanks a ton for the links there's nothing better then some first thing in the morning reading... loving the agricultural building plans link you sent... I have most of the things I need for a greenhouse sitting in the shed and I didn't even know it :D.

Its quite intresting how the fruit/veggi discussion actually went to court to be determined...
LOL sounds like my kind of shirt been waiting for the warm weather to hit soon as I'm going to be taking the dog tubing down the river lol. Is Maine where you are from? Nova Scotia is around 5 to 10 hours drive from Maine.. I've always wanted to go there mind you I've never been outside of canada. Thinking on making a trip down to South Carolina to take a look at a dog breeder down there too.

Hosta's do very well down here and I've now got my hubbys mother growing them in her flower gardens too... (we just expanded her property by almost an acre) now to just put in her rock paths she wanted. She decided that insead of growing corn this year (which she does in the back yard) she's going to build another garden area and do rasberries and strawberries though her plants don't seem to be doing that well. I believe the phesants are eating them on her.

Say it ain't so!
I'm going to take a close up picture when I get home and post it, so you can compare. I would hate to have to toss 3 plants, they are so big and beautiful with toms.

The second site you posted looks nothing like mine. Mine are more like parsley curl on some and just weird on theirs. Just the top new leaves.

Maybe I can just cut them off?

Here you go:

Fried green tomatoes

3/4 cup cooking oil 1 cup milk
3 to 4 med. Sized green, firm tomatoes 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
2 eggs salt, pepper, and garlic powder
To taste.

Place cooking oil in a 10 " skillet. Mix eggs with milk and blend well. Slice tomatoes in 1/4" slices. Dip each slice in the milk and egg mixture and then dip them in the flour and place slices in the skillet over very low heat. Add salt, pepper, and garlic powder to each tomato slice. Brown each side slightly to a golden brown. The tomatoes will be soft, and should be served hot.

These are just as good, and sometimes more popular, if you use self rising cornmeal.

Ms. Just Dahlia.
After reviewing your recent pictures, I regret to inform you, that I believe they are in early development of the tomato mosaic virus.

I resubmit one photograph with areas circled, that I compared with known virus specimens.
The one area especially at lower right in the shade has the characteristic leaf deformity.

Are you able to open any of the fruit for inspection?
Does any of the fruit show any signs of discoloration? (brownish spots)

I encourage you to show these pictures to a local expert for confirmation.
With out knowing your location in Northern California, I offer a link of County Contacts, that you may send an attachment of picture for further review:

Thanks for the info on trying to save them. I have to read more later, because I am at work.

No official confirmation yet, but last evening I got disgusted and cut off all the bad leaves and today I am going to move the sad plants as far away from my other plants as possible.:(

Some are actually touching the good plants.

I will also follow the rules for trying to save them.

I did cut one tomato that was a little deformed (could be due to a growth spurt) and it was all green inside. :) The others look OK.

I still have 6 plants unaffected or undetected, so I still have hope.:)

If they all get infected, I can always start over or buy from the market.:D

The other 3 are in the ground, with one all alone about 8 feet away. I'm taking my chances:rolleyes:

I tied up everybody, so no one is touching any one else, just like kids in the back seat of a car, it won't be allowed.:D

I'm pretty sure I have at least 3 that I never touched as they are behind some flowers and in front of a Yucca, so I might not have contaminated them.

Hi! Everyone :)

News from the Bucket, June 26th, 2009 ~ Vol. I ~ Ed. IX:

Weather sure been different this week. Started a little below seasonal Temps (avg. -4 departure) with a storm passing though Saturday morning (20th) early, to temps 3° above.
The Cooling Degree Days are finally starting to forge ahead of the Heating Degree Days. BBX received 0.92” ~ KCXY 1.42

An over-nite line of storms died out just on our doorstep this morning, but the NWS is forecasting a re-generation with the frontal passage 'bout 19:00 UTC.

In the “Kant fool Mother Nature” Department:
With the increase in daily temps, and a generous supply of UVA and B, BB's Bucket started to deform. There is a UVC but the EPA tells me that UVC can't pass through our atmosphere.
That Newton guy 'mite have something to do with it too. Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica - Wikipedia (http://foxyurl.com/7rv)

Well, in any event I rigged an extra set of suspenders (see pinkish pix in previous post) and I'm able to sleep better at night. I wonder if BB does?. I'll have to look that up... Do Plants Sleep? To the best of my knowledge they slow down when the Sun goes down, but don't actually suspend their animation like Humans do. You can form your own opinion from here: Do Plants Sleep? - Google Search (http://foxyurl.com/7rC)

Speaking of Boy Wonders I started pruning him back, nothing serious, just making sure the suckers are out'a the “crack in the crotch”.
I've read, one can trim everything back, except the last 3 to 4 branches on a stem, but that seems a little drastic. Then there's “Missouri” pruning where you just pinch off the tips of the branch... I've tried to reach a happy medium that suits me.
For more info: pruning tomatoes - Google Search (http://foxyurl.com/7rB)

BB is 48” vertical, and 32” in breadth ('cuz of pruning) with a total of 8 fruits, the largest approaching billiard ball size.

It's 8:00 PM and still 100 degrees at my home:eek:

I was at K Mart today to get some flip flops for my husband and found a good sized 'Celebrity Hybrid' I bought it and put it far far away from the other tomatoes.

I pruned it according to the site that K provided, lets see what happens:rolleyes:

Everything on that plate looks great and now I'm hungry.:)

I never heard of rhubarb loaf, I have only used it in jams. What does it taste like?

That is unreal!

You probably don't even feel like making anything.

But if you have fruits or veggies mix them with yogurt, ice cream or even salad dressing.

From the "It may sound strange department" I've been known to eat cold soup right out of the can. Just watch the ones like chicken noodle that has the fat still on top, pour it off and eat.
Its still gives your body nourishment.

And heed those warnings! 'bout heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke (also referred to as sunstroke). FEMA: Having A Heat Wave: Summer Is Here... Are You Prepared For Heat Emergencies? (http://foxyurl.com/7Do)

Well, I think that could be the worst for you and me too. We don't have any or much humidity here, so it's just hot hot hot.

In Chicago where I come from I wouldn't be able to handle 90 with the humidity:eek:

Just be alert and careful.

I've been out in the yard this past week without a shirt and for the first time in a long while I got a mild sunburn on my back and shoulders... tingles a little bit, and the skin feels leathery or tight.

It sure feels good though when the DW puts the noxzema on. :)

I'm going to float around the site check back in a few... k

p.s... BB loves the heat here, and he's up to 14 toms, with more coming.

Lol I know times a wastin' thanks for the recipe :D wooot... ruhbarb loaf is awesome.. its not got a strong flavor but its got almost the same texture as bananna bread almost... and looks a lot like it cept its not bananna's lol.

Wow I don't know f but I have a feeling that's quite warm for you guys.. we have not has enough sun to burn anything and the rain and humidity are bringing out the slugs. :O poor poor strawberry plants we have.. the slugs are eating them to death... even slugbait isn't working (says it will kill'm awwww bummer) tried to count the slugs on the walk up our lane.. lost track at 400 of the small things.. slugs and snails... my backyard is overwelmed with them.. and they have never been that bad before

If you have access to a fermented hops product, I think its called beer

Put it in shallow bowls around the strawberry plants... the slugs go to it and drink until they drown.

What a way to go!

Sand is also a deterrent, pour a short mound, and wider than they are long, around the perimeter of your garden.

They don't like the way it feels, it actually cuts them.

:eek:BEER?? Ewwwww.. but the hubby does drink it once in a while so there's always a 12 pack floating around I'm sure he won't miss some of it lol.. well I guess if you like beer it's a good way to go. Too bad rum didn't work LMAO I've got tons of that :D
Does it matter what kind of sand you use? Wouldn't ants be attracted to the sand on the ground? Wider then they are long. Now does that count for when they are streached out or just regularly... they are small snails and slugs (more slugs then snails though) and none of them are bigger then your thumb nail.

KUXJ
Jun 29, 2009, 12:50 PM
If you see "the man sadly nod and go off to do his own thing" :(, when you take his beer, try the rum.

Type... If you can get the kind they make glass out of, that's perfect. White then yellow.

Ants... Maybe when it rains. Sand won't stay formed enough dry, for them to make farms.

Length... regular, they won't be in it long enough to stretch. a few might be persistent

Type, again... don't matter

Thumbnail... length or width?

Reporting strange happenings with some of my tomatoes...

Since I trimmed icky (maybe virus) leaves on 6/23, none have come back or formed weirdly.

However I just noticed 1 tom on Mama mia looking like it has blossom end rot on it's side, and one early girl looks like it's starting to shrivel and turn whitish on the top of tomato.

I searched through our entire thread and found nothing that looked similar, but I might have missed something.

All of my plants are look good except for one and it's only problem is that it looks sparse.

UDT looks the same, only one tom and hasn't grown. Lots of flowers. No virus present. It reached the ground and I had to hang it up with some string.

My new Hybrid looks good, but it's just been a couple days.

Our temps have lowered to 100 F (38 C) from 108 F (42 C). I'm not sure if the toms got sun scorched or there is another problem. I'm thinking sun, because it hasn't hit all of them.

That's all I've got for now! I hear no planes above ::looks around:: and see nothing, so I'm assuming no one has any ripe toms yet. Tomorrow is July 1st.

God Bless

Hi! Everyone :)
News from the Bucket, July 3rd, 2009 ~ Vol. I ~ Edition X:

Its been 67 days since I gave BB his new home, (maturity 70-75 days) and even though I said earlier that his 1st born didn't show any signs of “blush”, I have to make a retraction.

Unless my eyes are deceiving me, I think I am seeing a “hint mind you”, a hint of “pink”.
My Dad, “Bless his Soul” would have been proud. He still would have given advice on why they weren't ready, but still proud.

He grew up on a farm outside of Elysburg, Pa. His family raised 25 acres of toms back in 1930, and Grandpa insisted they be ready for market the week of July 4th.
So you know what that means... He started seeds late March, early April. It was rare anyone in the valley bested Grandpa.

Here's to you Grandpa and Pop! ;) …... darn, I'm starting to get misty...

There is one other attraction near Elysburg, Knoebels Amusement Resort (http://www.knoebels.com/) one of the nicest amusement/camping parks you'll ever visit... free admission too!

JD reported toms would be two weeks late, and I believe her.

If you need a time duration calculator, look around there's more there: Date Duration Calculator: Days between two dates (http://www.timeanddate.com/date/duration.html)

For the past week. Weather around here has been slightly below normal, main reason is that cut-off Low that's been hanging around the Great Lakes. It's scheduled to start movin' out today. We've had spotty showers all week a few T-storms, with 50% chance today, highs, low to mid 70's.
Rainfall for the week at BBX 1.07” ~ KCXY 1.23”

BB's going to need a new bucket if this keeps up! He measured out to 57” vertical, 39” horizontal, and has 18 total toms. Must be that pruning I did, that extra energy has got to go somewhere.

b44 will be glad to hear the additional support for the bucket has stopped the deformation of BB's home. He still doesn't look like the ones you see in the TV ads. “They” must have someone sitting in a chair waiting on them “Hand and Foot”.
Still, I'm happy that I'm finally seeing production. :)

JD be sure to see pix, I have one that looks like you were describing on pg. 15, the blossom end is forming on its side.

'Bout Blossom End Rot:
This is just me, but I try and knock off the dried blossom end as soon after I see the tom developing. I don't force it... Like when your pickin' 'Lopes “the stem will just kinda' pop off” when its ready. Nothing scientific 'bout it (least I haven't found anything yet) and no I don't equate it with a newborn baby's bellybutton healin' up.
Doesn't seem to hurt or help. Is it that, the Calcium or both? Hmmmm...

Well... I guess y'all know what tomorrow is...

I didn't want to clutter up the thread with pixs of fireworks so here's a link, there's one there that looks like Just Dahlia's avatar.
I can start a contest to see who picks the right one?:
fireworks - Google Image Search (http://images.google.com/images?sourceid=gmail&rls=gm&q=fireworks&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=IypOSpHKKIeWtgfTwMSoBA&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=8)

My apologies to binx44 (Canada's Dominion Day was July 1st), and any others I may have missed. I put this 'mark in my treasure chest for future reference:
July Holidays - Holidays Around The World (http://www.aglobalworld.com/holidays-around-the-world/tag/july/)

Have a happy and safe Fourth of July........Govern, yourself.......Accordingly!

Preamble to the United States Constitution - Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preamble_to_the_United_States_Constitution)

I am proud of my country, but I would also like to see a preamble “of the United States”, and “the United States of America.” to

K the plant is coming along nicely and YES I am SO GLAD that the extra support stopped the deformation of BB's home. I`m sure he will be pretty on his own *hmmm is there a male and female tomato plant or are they asexual* right and I bet the ones on TV did have someone waiting on them hand and foot, I accept your apology though you didn't have to apologise... *hmmm is there a male and female tomato plant or are they asexual*

1.) We need to establish the meaning of asexual.

Asexual
Dictionary: a·sex·u·al (ā-sĕk'shū-əl) adjective

1.Having no evident sex or sex organs; sexless.
2.Relating to, produced by, or involving reproduction that occurs without the union of male and female gametes, as in binary fission or budding.
3.Lacking interest in or desire for sex.

Asexuality a·sex'u·al'i·ty (-ăl'ĭ-tē) n.
Asexually a·sex'u·al·ly adv.

For the purposes of this discussion I shall stay with this one.
As applied to propagation, indicates any method of increasing plants except by seeds, such as by cuttings, layering, or division.
Gardener's Dictionary: asexual (http://www.answers.com/library/Dictionary%20for%20Gardeners-cid-4627)

2.) is there a male and female tomato plant

Technically, the tomato is hermaphroditic which means that both male and female parts exist in the same flower. Plant Answers (http://www.plantanswers.com/garden_column/apr03/4.htm)

There is a female-sterile plant that scientist are working with to produce fruit.
A FEMALE-STERILE MUTANT IN THE TOMATO -- HONMA and PHATAK 55 (3): 143 -- Journal of Heredity (http://jhered.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/pdf_extract/55/3/143)

Through Human intervention, mutations can, and do occur that result in sterile, but healthy blossoms of each.
There is genetic research being done to see if plants of this type can be made to produce fruit.
Wiley InterScience (http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/119116244/abstract?CRETRY=1&SRETRY=0)
Natural intervention does happen, but at a rate that is difficult for anyone but a scientist to observe.

Now that we have established a baseline, I can answer your questions

Are there male and female tomato plants?
Yes

Are they asexual?
Using the first definitions #1 and #3 No.
Using #2 and the Gardeners Dictionary Yes, because tomatoes can be propagated as mentioned in the Gardeners Dictionary.

I take no responsibility if the server edits any of this post. That's its job.

Hi! Everyone :)

Just a couple of things this morning.

Was thinking 'bout the asexual post and pollination, for now I'm giving the fruit stems a little shake to observe if it will produce more... more on Friday.

Found a Salsa recipe... It's Fiesta Time (http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/1523/)

And just curious 'bout this mushroom, every morning it sprouts, grows to a little under 2" then dies off at night only to start over again the next day.

Wow, that was some reception last night for Dr. Dahlia!
I would have stayed later, but had to get Eddie to the airport, glad I stuck to the Bloody Mary's... sans alcohol.

I know nothing about mushrooms, except for the ones you eat and buy at the local grocer. I didn't even know that they died at night and could sprout that fast, I just always thought field mushrooms were beautiful and intriguing.

But, I am remiss with my speech, must have been those Bloody Marys KUXJ was sharing. I think he put something in mine.

*First of all the weather, even though it was not predictable as it usually is, with out weather we have nothing.

*I would like to thank Lowe's for the 'pot' in which MAMA MIA has been living her life

*I really need to thank my 'hoarding' gene for saving the Miracle Grow for Tomatoes for years and my organizational skills for being able to find said Miracle Grow.

*My dogs for not digging up the plants

*and of course KUXJ, Binx44 for info and support through the many problems that have occurred

And who am I forgetting:rolleyes:

(Pouts)Usually on a forum, writings that are contained in “Quotes” as in “Quote User” are similar to an image, and the server holds that image until it recognizes additional text outside of the boundaries of the “Quote Brackets”. Either [ or ]

A member is still allowed to modify the interior of that image, but again, the server is holding that “Image” until it “sees” additional input.

By the way... I liked what you were trying to do. :)

I did have to tie up a lot of plant parts that didn't want to cooperate and stay inside the cage, also put up some old metal fencing to help support, it's not pretty, but will keep them off the ground.

I might be pulling in a couple 'Mama Mias' this afternoon. I have a large San Francisco Fog that looks absolutely perfect, maybe ready by the weekend.:D

More on that later. Now I can tie this in. It may be covered in the Science or Computers and technology forums of AMHD. I thought this died six years ago...

Neighbor Harry called me last night and asked me; Is Mars, going to be the closest it ever has to Earth, and as big as the full Moon this August?

I'm not going to get into a long explanation, because it doesn't deserve anyone's time.

You can read 'bout it here:
NASA - The Mars Hoax Goes Viral (http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/mars/news/mars-20090609.html)
snopes.com: Mars Close to Earth (http://www.snopes.com/science/astronomy/brightmars.asp)
SPACE.com -- Mars Hoax Circulates: 'Big as the Moon!' (http://www.space.com/spacewatch/090519-mars-hoax.html)
It's at the bottom here:
NASA - Science@NASA (http://science.nasa.gov/)

The truth is that Mars is not an "Evening Star", and is barely a "Morning Star" in being paired with Venus. It will not be conveniently visible to North America till 'round December.
Mars in August 2009 (http://www.otastro.org/Mars2005/)
If anyone tries to tell you different... You tell them from me that "It's all a bunch of Hooey"

Thank You! I'll go an put my soapbox away now, and stand in the corner for a while...

On a lighter side...
Try to see Friday's edition of NFTB, the asexual post has me intrigued and I'm putting together a short presentation on "Propagating Double Impatiens".

Many theories have been advanced to interpret why, the Mayans stopped their Tzolkin at the Baktun of

12 ~ 21 ~ 2012
Some have even pegged it at 11:11am GMT

I am not sure which I believe in. they all have, some valid points.
The strongest for me; is the Mayans felt it would be a time of transition.
A transition to what?

I don't see a need in worrying because nothing can be done about it anyway. I believe we will go in a tremendous catalyst of varying degrees starting soemwhere in the world. That is to say, another continent will perish first and then possibly the one we are on.

I don't think having an underground bunker with supplies to last a certain amount of time is going to do any good.

There is absolutely too much technology available to world powers as it stands right now. What different does it make actually, who does it first. They will be doing it to themselves as well.

A passive tick just enjoying what she has and living for the moment and enjoying those she loves to the fullest of her capabilities. Salute the Mayans !

I love that you chose that symbol K.. Its also very intresting looking. I was thinking of getting a myan tattoo but I wasn't sure where to begin looking for proper glyphs. So far I have a lady bug tattoo (prosperity and luck) two butterflies (love and freedom) Its nice to see you with an avitar finally :D
I've always loved ancient culture. I love learning new things and discovering things that are used today that were actually used long ago.. for example. . I found out yesterday that a few hundred years AD the chinese actually had flamethrowers (dont you just love the ancient histroy channel) neat huh.
Got lots of planning to do today. Our friends daughters 10th birthday party is today and I've got to get her something. And I'm going to start drawing flower bed plans by my front door I get wicked good sunlight there where in my last place the windows were badly placed and I got NO sun at all and no sun around the front door we had (which was all the property we had LOL) so I get to go nuts.. might not plant anything but it'll be nice to have it all planned and marked and ready to go

Physiological in the sense that it's not a pest or disease. Some cultivars just do it more than others and some envrionmental factors such a cool temps could be involved . Any Extension home garden tomato publication talks about it.

Here's one from North Dakota with a good picture under the "non-parasitic" bookmark--they call it "leaf roll":

Hi!, jomercer, Welcome to AMHD, and the UDT thread :)

I believe your in reference to Just Dahlia's Leaf Curl Pix's on; Page 9 ~ Post 86. Can you verify that?
When you say "physiological" do you mean a type of stress? What type?
Can you cite references for verification?

Hi! Everyone :)
News from the Bucket (nftb), July 10th, 2009 ~ Vol. I ~ Edition XI:

Happiness depends upon ourselves.
Aristotle; Greek critic, philosopher, physicist, & zoologist (384 BC - 322 BC)

Something I do to make me happy is, when I rise from the night's sleep I throw on a shirt and my shorts go outside to the yard, and slowly take a walk 'round the property.

It's a peaceful time, as I walk to each of the plant locations to make the first of the day's observations, and in my travels I will have moments of solitude where I give thanks for everything around me, and hope I can be useful today.

*** *** *** *** ***

After posting nftb last week we had our 50% of showers come through to the tune of 0.51”. Nice, low humidity, breezy, in the mid70's.
Rainfall for the week at BBX 0.51” ~ KCXY 0.96”

Chance of Showers, T-storms Sat. Sat.nite, POP 60~70%
New rainfall amounts between a quarter and, one-half inch except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

BB's still looking healthy, hasn't grown much though, only 2 more inches to 59 and girth to 40. He's gained two more toms, makes 20.
At first he took off after the one pruning, but now has leveled off and is pushing his energy into quality of production.
The pruning is doing what it's designed to do, i.e. change plant quantity into quality an that's okay with me. So if you want all the toms your plants can produce, just let the plant grow.

Been busy with other gardening chores. Besides BB, the DW and me have:
Banana Peppers, Red bell peppers, mini-straight-neck yellow squash, Red raspberry Mulberry Elderberry

Flowers include:
Hosta Calla Lily Hydrangea Marigolds Bearded Iris Burgundy Clematis Crimson Mandevilla Red and Pink Double Impatiens and two that you saw in the “fried green zucchini” pix on pg. 14; petunia and verbena

After the asexual post, the wiley 'mark got me to thinkin' 'bout manual pollination. So now when I go by BB, I started using my index finger to jiggle the blossoms a little, but switched to a long artists brush. I smoke :( and didn't want to take a chance on transferring the residue to BB. I wish I could quit cold turk, and am down to a pack every fortnight and an occasional cigar... I'll get there :)

'bout the Pink Impatiens, while in transport we had a couple of stems break off and I hated to just toss 'em, so I put 'em in a bud vase with plain tap water and after one week they've started to root. See pix. The first is the Mother plant, I had a problem posing them to show the roots so I procured one of Eddies friends (Skelator) to help me.

Impatiens is an annual. See: Annual plant - Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annual_plant) but if I remember correctly Mom had these forever. You can even do it with a carrot, Just change the water once a week an their happy :)

Hi KUX, I share your interest in Mayans. We had a lovely holiday a few years ago visiting Chichen Itza. It is such a totally awesome place to visit. Almost like the Mayans walked out of their arena and were having a siesta. As a gift for our son who couldn't attend, we had his name written in ancient Mayan on, I forget, some kind of cloth and had it framed when got back. Very interesting. Of course, the food in that area was just so very good, everything fresh and lots of fruit for breakfast.

The hotel where we stayed outside of Cancun was surrounded by ancient temples in varying stages of archeological exploration. They haven't even scratched the surface there yet in discoveries.

I understand just recently they found an untouched temple of the Aztecs below Mexico City.

Have a great day in your garden, friend, as I will in mine, it is my day off.

Cap, up to 4 cm, whitish grey and furrowed. Gills, grey black. Stem, white, tufty. On moist soil near broad-leaved trees. Not edible"

"Fungi are certainly the most common organisms associated with plant disease. I say “associated” because the pathogen, by itself, does not equal disease. A susceptible host plant and the proper environment are also necessary."

K.. She's not a book type girl. She's more of the girl who's out playing outdoors with the boys rather then being inside with a book but I was thinking maybe a membership and a 3 month riding instruction all paid for her at the local riding facility.. she's always asking me about animals and horses are her favorite *i'm a horse freak too* Though I do have an animal species around the world book *its thick* that I know she loves and I just bought a new copy of so maybe I'll give her my brand new copy and keep my old one instead of sending it off to hide in my attic with all the rest of my books that are falling apart with use that I can't bring myself to get rid of. Ohhh I don't know.. I'm so bad with gifts LOL... I still remember when I could pick her up and carry her around on my shoulders.. its hard to believe we have known them for so long. I'll look at the myan links.. totally :D and the greek ones too.. I'm into symbolism..
About the mushroom.. you sure you looking at the right photo on the link they gave? I noticed even when I was using it this morning that it didn't always send you to the photo you wanted. I also checked out mushroomexpert.com

Ooo yes and this.. I found this intresting.. its another opinion about the winter solstace (dec 21 2012) and the myan calendars...

On the day of the Winter Solstice, December 21st, 2012, many of the greater and lesser Mayan cycles converge. This has often been interpreted to be the portent of some fearful doomsday scenario awaiting the fate of mankind and the Earth. It has also been a point of derision in dismissing the entirety of the validity of an ancient calendar as meaningless in modern society. The astrophysical reality behind this particular date is that this is the precise day that the solar meridian crosses the galactic equator. The Earth, Sun, and the galactic center of the Milky Way are in alignment, with the Sun directly between Earth and the center of the galaxy. The ecliptic plane of the Milky Way galaxy is within a dark band stretching across the length of it which the ancient Mayans called the Road to Xibalba. In reality (the reality consensus of modern science, that is) this dark band is caused by interstellar dust particles obscuring the view of the stars that populate this region of space. The midpoint of this dark, narrow band in the Milky Way is the Galactic Center, in the direction of the constellation Saggitarius, with about 50,000 light years in either direction to the outer reaches of this mid-sized galaxy. This particular juncture in time is also believed to be alluded to in The Great Cross at Hendaye, a mysterious cross of unknown origin in Europe.

Just thought I would chime in on this one, if anyone is still reading along after 22 pages?
I guess tomato plants are really popular like roses!
Have grown fields full of tomato plants and I too saw that commercial and thought, I could do that, just like you did.

Also I thought, does that company know what a full grown tomato plant weighs? Because I picture people handing them on little bitty hooks then getting concussions and suing them when they break off there...

Any way my thinking is, you can grow your bucketed tomato right side up, with or without a stake until it starts to set little green fruits, at which time you can invert it and hang it up, the weight of the fruits causing it to hang down straight. Within a day or two the individual leaves on the stem will have turned themselves around to face the sun just like a sunflower does.

Also folks be careful what kind of bucket you use, best to start with a brand new one to avoid any kind of plant diseases.

In the past growing container plants my tomatoes did best in soil in the garden rather than in containers but I have grown some really great peppers in big containers as the plants are much smaller when fully grown.

Currently, many species of mushrooms, which have been used in Asian folk medicine for thousands of years, are under intense study by ethnobotanists and medical researchers. Maitake, shiitake, Agaricus blazei, chaga, and reishi are prominent among those being researched for potential anti-cancer, anti-viral, and immune system-enhancing properties.

In Europe and Japan, Polysaccharide-K (brand name Krestin), a chemical derived from Trametes versicolor, is an approved adjuvant for cancer therapy.[15][16] The shiitake mushroom is a source of lentinan, a beta-glucan which is also approved in various countries including Japan, as an adjuvant for cancer therapy.[17][18][19]

In 2009, a case-control study of the eating habits of 2,018 woman, revealed that women who consumed mushrooms had an approximately 50% lower incidence of breast cancer. Women who consumed mushrooms and green tea had a 90% lower incidence of breast cancer.[20] Human clinical studies are currently being conducted in the United States to investigate if the common table mushroom can limit breast cancer.[21] The reason scientists believe the table mushroom may inhibit breast cancer is due to the fact it possess anti-aromatase activity[22][23] (and therefore possible anti-estrogen activity in the human body) as well as immune system enhancing properties.[24][25]

The City of Hope National Medical Center is currently conducting clinical trials to determine the anti-cancer effects of the shiitake mushroom.[26]

Oyster mushrooms are a natural source of lovastatin, a widely prescribed statin drug used to lower cholesterol.[27]

Wikipedia (taken from) I thought this was intresting...

George.. Yes there are still people reading it after 22 pages :D. Well I never thought about that... and yes the commercial does show poor hanging tequniques... I wonder if people have gotten hurt yet or not.

Maybe something for next year, if I survive this year.:)

Hi! George Leigh, and Welcome to UDT :)

Just thought I would chime in on this one, if anyone is still reading along after 22 pages? I guess tomato plants are really popular like roses!!Sure George, any and all contributions are greatly appreciated. I wanted to respond sooner, but was busy with the nftb newsletter, and updating the UDT links. 22 Pages? Never in my wildest dreams. If you haven't, take some time to look back.

The idea that our Roving Botanist, Dr. Just Dahlia phd.udt. has 'bout starting your own thread on roses sounds like a wonderful idea!

Her pix on page 18 post 180 https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/gardening-plants/upside-down-tomatoes-352932-18.html a dinner plate Dahlia still leaves me speechless, For some reason I started hearing Peruvian Flute Music and still do when I view it. (My apologies for not complimenting you sooner Dr. D..."Ouch" wadya do dat for?)

Have grown fields full of tomato plants and I too saw that commercial and thought, I could do that, just like you did. Also I thought, does that company know what a full grown tomato plant weighs? Because I picture people handing them on little bitty hooks then getting concussions and suing them when they break off of there....I'm estimating my UDT weighed in at 80lbs when I hung it Convert-Me.Com - online units conversion :: View topic - Weight of Dirt (http://www.convert-me.com/bb_en/viewtopic.php?p=6018) (didn't feel like a bag of Cment) one reason I used 1.5” bar stock.
From past experience I knew the bucket handle would probably not last, that's why I added the 12/3 romex. The camera was acting up when I took the pix, but the roladex says its on page 12 post 112 https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/gardening-plants/upside-down-tomatoes-352932-12.html

Any way my thinking is, you can grow your bucketed tomato right side up, with or without a stake until it starts to set little green fruits, at which time you can invert it and hang it up, the weight of the fruits causing it to hang down straight. Within a day or two the individual leaves on the stem will have turned themselves around to face the sun just like a sunflower does.Looks like an easier way to get started, do you think the bucket should have a lid to keep the dirt in or would it cake, and stay in by itself?

Also folks be careful what kind of bucket you use, best to start out with a brand new one to avoid any kind of plant diseases. That's sage advice!

In the past growing container plants my tomatoes did best in soil in the garden rather than in containers but I have grown some really great peppers in big containers as the plants are much smaller when fully grown. I can't shake the notion “The larger the container, the bigger the plant”. The largest container I know is Good ol' Mother Earth.

1011 AM EDT SAT JUL 11 2009

THIS HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK IS FOR CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA.

.DAY ONE... TODAY AND TONIGHT.

THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS THIS AFTERNOON AND
EVENING... AS A COLD FRONT PUSHES ACROSS THE REGION. THE MAIN
THREATS WOULD BE FOR DAMAGING WIND GUSTS AND HAIL... BUT TORNADOES MAY BE POSSIBLE.

Darn!. and I was going to get my hair done!

There is a short wave that should hit 'bout 4pm edt, then the main 'bout 8pm

Seasonal varients in the same season always wreak havoc on 'shrooms.. we had some beautiful ones growing here (i've got to get my camera charged) but once the dampness in the air and the coolness in the morning has changed they are no longer there *cries*Someone needs to start a poll for more smiley's
Love the new edition of links.. I feel so special when i see my own links in there :D though on page twenty post 193. maybe we should state what the link is for? *just adding advice *Not sure what's up with that one? Did the usual, went to preview, and that's usually when the server puts the tag in, BUT not this time.

Luckily AMHD has a long edit time (I seen up to 24hrs.) and I was able to add a line. See if that's okay.

Well I hope you don't get any hail, tornadoes or windgusts that are too bad... Its been dry, Hot. Around 28 c today so its been nice. Supposed to get mild rainshowers to 1 to 3 mm of rain in the next two days.

I do agree... hmmm where would said poll about smilies be put and what smilie options should be on said poll... *thinks*

The Tagline for the link looks good to me... :D I had to say something. It stood out to me and your right AMHD does usually add the taglines

Well i hope you dont get any hail, tornadoes or windgusts that are too bad... Its been dry, Hot. Around 28 c today so its been nice. supposed to get mild rainshowers to 1 to 3 mm of rain in the next two days. Satellite/Radar show diminishing returns.

I do agree... hmmm where would said poll about smilies be put and what smilie options should be on said poll... *thinks*In that it is a system improvement it needs to be in the Forum Community section for best exposure.
As all thoughtful members like me  should do,
I searched "creating a poll" no results... well, 3, but nothing relevant
Then "Polls" 235 results, still nothing relevant to creation.

So AMHD has them, but I couldn't find how to create.
Go to feedback Feedback - Ask Me Help Desk (https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/feedback/).
Ask question 'bout :) poll and/or why there's a paucity of them.
I'm sure you'll get an answer.

Two simple Polls:
Do you favor an increase in Smiley's Yes No
Do you favor an increase in Smiley's per post? Yes No
If you like, use my "quotecode" for 2 simple polls in your question.

The Tagline for the link looks good to me... Okay

I've been remiss about posting, way too busy:eek:

I have not read all the posts, but I will in the next couple days, because it seems like we are going back into the 100's, not a whole lot to do outside at that point, except in the morning (which is best):)

UDT has spurted (?) I now have 12 toms and they seem to be growing rapidly.

I have eaten 3 toms (all Mama Mia) but in 1 or 2 days time, I will have some biggies!:D DH going out of town, so I will have them all to myself.

I noticed no 'Rose thread' yet:confused: and I just had a big problem with my 'Nancy Reagan (sp?) had to cut her WAY back.:(

Hope everybody is eating tomatoes!! :D

I noticed no 'Rose thread' yet:confused: and I just had a big problem with my 'Nancy Reagan (sp?) had to cut her WAY back :( Sorry to hear 'bout Nancy. We have a miniature “been so long we don't remember the name rose”.
What we like 'bout it is when it blooms, the roses are multi-colored.

Your welcome to hang your hat here. We can make every other week Rose week.
Hmm... I wonder if we ask Mr. curlyben real nice.
He would adjust the title of the thread??

If you think of anything, throw it out there and we'll see if it sticks.

JD... if I knew about roses I'd post something but sadly.. My nice rose bush has turned wild.. don't know what I did wrong to it.. I wish I knew how to prune it proper and what is the best fertalizer etc... :(
I know I'm eating tomatoes but they are from my neighbour..

K still no 'shrooms I see.. might just have to wait until they decide to re-appear. I love the nasa links.. :D I guessed they grew them on the space station.. now I wonder because of the atmosphere differentials (spelling? Please correct my spelling if its wrong) I noticed my word documents don't have a spell check :O...

"turned wild"? As in it's all thorny and not flowering the color/shape/size you bought it for? Or just overgrown because youhaven't pruned it? What kind of rose is it supposed to be?

Its been here so so long that I don't remember what rose bush it was.. the flowers used to be big , decent sized now they never get bigger then maybe twice the size of a loonie (Our Dollar Coin) The flowers used to be Cup sized (as in the bottom of a coffee mug or bigger) and they used to be deep red now they are lighter then they used to be.. they are also over grown because when I am always worried about pruining roses
Tick.. I don't think it was ever just a tomato thread LOL

tickNow that we have expended voluminous (gratuitous use of a word) quantities of energy for our Charges,
It has become a slow time, waiting for fruition.

Besides, we have to have something to talk about over winter

That's why I'm encouraging any topic pertaining to G&P, including the adjustment to the title,
Such as, UDT ~ G & P?. I smell a contest!!! wish I could have more smiley's

By the way, now is the time to start planning nexxxt years garden...

I have received a response from our Moderator curlyben on a clarification of the discussion from page 23 Last half of post 225 to page 24 post 232.

I will not divulge the contents of that PM.
Suffice it to say, it pertained to adjusting the direction of UDT.
This is my interpretation of that conversation.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Traditions being strong here at AMHD. The consensus is, to maintain the Upside down Tomatoes thread as it was intended to be.

I take this moment, to Thank curlyben for allowing us the leeway in taking UDT to the heights that it has gained now, and in the future.

There are, several options:
A Thread on Roses would have to be started We can use this thread to pick a meaningful topic A new thread on tomatoes for next years Gardening has been suggested A poll can be created, if requested, but only by an Admin with a rating of Super or above.

The floor is now open for discussion.

My opinion would be...
Only talk about tomatoes here (I had a feeling there would be a problem, the way it was heading)

Start new thread on Roses (I think that would be interesting and informative):) at least to me

Start new thread on getting garden set up for next years produce I need some ideas, there was one started a while ago by Startover (I think), but it dwindled out, so I didn't get much info. (something to talk about over the winter):D I'm thinking about a raised garden.

OOOPS! ::looks around:: (forgot about rule #1) My tomatoes are doing great:rolleyes:

Sounds good to me.. I think maybe a two way split thread on garden building/planting ideas and Roses... that way it could really cover both and both are quite (correction... )both would be very helpful and informative to everyone. Plus at the same time being convienant.. though I could understand if it was single separate threads
*maybe we could do flowers in generall... just an idea*

*edit, adding this* I posted my rose question in the gardening forum where this is... in a new thread... Thinking maybe we should start a 'shroom thread sometime maybe too

In looking over the UDT thread I have found at least 73 links for reference to the discussions we have had.

There are 34 topics that could be started and carry themselves, in other areas of AMHD. A Thread on Roses  nasa links. After 'bout the first month I started thinking “this is turning into a blog”, and I'd better watch that we stay on topic.
I was trying at first, then after it became a “sticky”,
I only tried to maintain a “as long as it pertains to Gardening and Plants” position.

I'll be the first to admit some of it was a stretch
I don't know 'bout you, but I'll also say, I've had fun, and
I apologize if I've stepped on anyone's toes.

I'm still open for business, but I need to redirect from here on anyway.
So I'll be slowin' down.
The last NFTB till October will be on July 31st

I just need a ripening frenzy and the Salsa brigade will begin.

As soon as the sun goes behind the fence tonight, I will take a pic, unless I want to brave the 105 weather sooner:eek:

I love Mexico, and the food is just so fantastic ! They put fresh salsa on the table every meal, JD. You don't need a lot of tomatoes. I add fruit as well and lime juice and... and... all kinds of stuff, no just kidding.

I absolutely abhor canned salsa now that I have eaten so often in Mexico. They don't cook it !

Talk later and give you secrets, okay...

Been out in the yard eyeing places for toms to go.. :D next year will sure be intresting if I can convince the DH to assist me with my toms until I can come home for summer break from college.. if not I guess I will have to maybe do some toms in pots and ferry them back with me to nova scotia (if it wouldn't stress them out) when I come back for the summer. Tell DH you'll pay him back triple for the slug sauce, that should do it!
Look for a salt-tolerant variety when you start.

There should be no ill effects with the ferry ride. Check though with the ShipLine they may have to be crated.
(like luggage on an airline, check 'em in and they take it from there)

Worst case... even though it is the same Country, they might not allow Export to the Island :(

Hi! Everyone :)

News from the Bucket (nftb), July 17th, 2009 ~ Vol. I ~ Edition XII:

After posting nftb last week, hasn't rained here 'til 'bout six hours ago.

Saw another post 'bout waterin' toms, and if I remember correctly, it referred to regularly grown toms.

Didn't follow the advice cause of BB being in a bucket.
After a day an a half, you can see how thirsty he is, not much mind you, maybe a quart.
For next year I'm going to haveta add perlite or those little round things like pearls
To absorb the water, then release it gradually.

Rainfall for the week at BBX 0.00” ~ KCXY 0.24”
Chance of Showers, T-storms today into tonight, POP 80~50%
New rainfall amounts between a tenth and, quarter inch except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

BB's still lookin' healthy, 5 more inches to 64 and girth to 42.
He's gained ten more toms, makes 30.
The DW tells me that her friends at work were saying their toms
Aren't ripening either, so I'll chalk it up to the weather.

Had 4hours of showers come through today for a total of 0.25, KCXY reported 0.24, and
We have another line expected 'round 10pm.

Been working on irrigation systems for BB and my other plants,
Can't wait to see my water bill, even on trickle.
I guess that's how it goes with the weather, feast or famine.

I have been working on repairing our sidewalk along the garden planter.
A Maple root pushed up a section of sidewalk... Not sure where to post it...
There are a few questions here in G&P 'bout roots...
Maybe Home improvement
I'll leave a pix.

I was soooo impressed with your UDT BB, that I was going to make a comment and then I saw your anaconda root  and got really impressed with the Saw. I forgot what I was doing and gave you a greenie for the Saw!:p
I have one of those, but not allowed to use it when DH is in town. ::SHHHH::

Sorry about the concrete, I have had to deal with something like that, but lucky for me just bricks (which was a pain) It took me two years to kill some Poplar roots that went all through my garden. (another story) I'm good now.:)
