When I try to open IE it opens and closes in 3 seconds. No error message at all. I have tried IE repairs, upgrading to a newer version, inserting the disc.. nothing works. I have xp professional sp3. I can use fire fox no problem, but some sites will not work with fore fox. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Here's a link to a Microsoft fix for this problem.

Internet Explorer 7 closes immediately when you start Internet Explorer 7 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932540)

"To resolve this problem, remove or rename all the instances of the PSAPI.dll file that are located in the folder for the application that closes. The PSAPI.dll file is a component that is not redistributable. The PSAPI.dll file must only be located in the Windows folder or in the Windows\System32 folder. "

In other words, do a search (start | search) for PSAPI.dll. If you find any instances that are not in the Windows\System32 folder, rename them to something like PSAPI.dll.bad, or you can delete them.

If that doesn't work, post back and maybe we'll be able to talk you through another idea. Please post (post it exactly) any error message that you see.

Another idea. I use Firefox for almost everything. In Firefox, go to TOOLS | ADD-ONS. Select Get Add-ons and locate "User Agent Switcher". This allows you to ask Firefox (under TOOLS | AGENT SWITCHER) to tell the web sites you're going to that "I'm IE7" and they respond in kind. It's rare that a page won't display at all with Firefox.
