Recently a friend of mine had their basement toilet backup sewage into the basement. The plumber figured out there were tree roots in the sewer which lead to the problem and ended up fixing it. They removed all of the carpet and other materials affected by the backup, but the smell remains.

I noticed in another thread using lime pellets for a backup under the house would remove the smell, but would this also work for in a basement, and how should they be used properly? If you have another suggestion, please let me know, their house has smelled like it since and I'd like to try and help them get rid of the smell.

Thanks.

Bleach will work to kill bacteria also. Mop the affected area with it. Good luck, Tom

Ok, but how would you treat it with the lime?

You use lime pellets outside where rain and sprinklers will dissolve the pellets.
Inside you'll use powdered lime and spread it around. Good luck, Tom
