View Full Version : Responding to overseas debt collectors

We have overseas debt in the UK, = about 14,000US$. We keep getting letters, about every week or two, threatening legal action and collection of the outstanding amount by debt collector in the US. They've even offered to lower the total outstanding if we pay now.

Should we respond to the letters by writing or calling? Will that start more pressure from them? We have absolutely no money to send right now because one of us is not working, hasn't found work, and the other does not earn enough to start paying off the debt. Will they really come after us? We will be happy to start paying what we can afford if the other person finds work.

Thanks for any advice - really need to know soon!

Since you acknowledge that the debt is legitimate and intend to pay it when you are able, just write them a letter explaining your circumstances. That may avert the hassle of dealing with a debt collector. And you won't be any worse off.
