aww alty you didnt answer my question... hehe. what kind of bunny is the last one in the pics of yours.. you know the one that looks like a lion

Oops, I didn't see the question.

Kilala is a lion head dwarf harlequin mix. She came from a home with 200 plus rabbits that where allowed to run free and breed free.

She has blue eyes, like most harlequins, but the wild hairdo is all lionhead.

Cotton is a pure lionhead dwarf.

Oreo is a rex and Thumper is a heinz 57! :)

One of her relatives for sure. That would be a purebred lionhead that's squishing the little brown bunny. Poor brown bunny, his name is Squishy! :)

Actually, taking another look, I don't think that is a lionhead, I think it's an angora. Hmmmm, time to research.

Bad bunny expert, bad. :(

He has a big boof head and a tiny little body lol

I'm too scred to bath mine. I have done with Jack and he actually liked it, he would run under the hose...
The others... wayy to feisty!

Speaking of feisty, damn Diego is being a little pain... he wants Dora something shocking... all I hear when I'm trying to sleep is *thump thump thump* of the feet, which in turn sets the dogs off!
Yikes, can't wait till those stitches heal! Little beggar will be going into the bunny mansion outside!

Unknown008

Ok, for me, all those rabbits seeming like a lion are the relatives of Kilala, lol.

At first sight, I thought it was Kilala. But close looking yes, you're right, this doesn't seem too much like a lionhead one.

You can tell by the ears Unky. Lionheads have a lot of long fur around the head, like a mane, hence the term Lionhead.

Angoras have longer hair all over, especially on the ears.

It's sometimes hard to determine what's what in the bunny world. There are so many different breeds of rabbits, and even within the specific breeds there are so many variations. It's mostly a look, study and then best guess kind of thing. :)

Oooh yeah, I would never be able to have them in the same room! It just sucks because I can't have them anywhere but the laundry...

Twins? Oo I want to see tooo :D
Eventually when we move into our home (we are in a rental right now) I'll be able to have more pets again.. I'm sure once we do I'll be bringing home every stray cat and stray dog I come across :D I'm well known for doing that.. maybe adopt some horses from heaven can wait equine rescue in ontario like I did back when I had farm land

Shaz. I think I might of rambled on with that one.. the only thing I was wondering was how long guppies are pregnant for :D I've got like 6 pregnant ones and I do have a breeder tank (it flots in the big tank so I don't worry about water, or shocking the poor things when moving them to a new tank) I've yet to see them giving birth but I know they give birth to live young and I'd love to see it lol...
And yes... there's about eighty fishies... I wish my sucker was only a little guy :D back when he was new he was this little tiny thing. Now he's over half the height of the tank (top to bottom not left to right :D)

shazamataz
May 26, 2009, 12:17 PM
Watching guppies being born is amazing... the come out as little balls then they flick open and sink to the bottom... it's neat ;)

What sort of breeder trap do you have?
You need to have one with a plastic bottom with either holes or slits in it with a bigger box around it...
That sounded confusing... lol
Ok well... basically a box or box shaped net with an area at the bottom where the babies can get away from the mother otherwise she will eat them!

You also need to get some 'Fry Food', it's a cloudy liquid that you feed the babies with..

Probably should have posted that on your thread lol, oh well :D

Years ago my mum adopted an ex race horse (well a pacer actually), he lived to be 27 I think, before we had to have him put to sleep, he was great, I was too little to ride him when he could actually be ridden and by the time I was old enough to ride, he was too old!

These are just some random snaps, I'll get some better ones later.

Shaz. My breeder trap is all plastic with slits in the sides.. floats on the top sides... with a plastic V that sits in it to separate fry from the mother. It used to be a friend of mine's (they were his fish origionally) I do believe the first few generations are long gone and these all are the newer ones :D.. I've got fry food. Tons of patience and lots of interaction.

The nice thing, they're already a bonded pair so bonding them to Dora shouldn't be that hard. :)

Tons of patience and lots of interaction.

The nice thing, they're already a bonded pair so bonding them to Dora shouldn't be that hard. :)

Where did you get them Shazzy?

Got that wrong!
Yep, they get along great, they cuddle up next to each other when they sleep but Dora hates them...

A friend of Vaughns mum breeds them (I didn't know that before!) and after hearing what happened she offered for us to take one for free.
We saw photos and the love bug bit (nobody can resist a baby bunny!) and went and picked her up.
We put her next to Dora and she went absolutely mental biting at the wire.
I thought she might have just been trying to get to her in a good way so I opened the door to the pen... she jumped over straight away and tried to bite her... I took Dora away straight away so she didn't scare her.

I haven't given up hope and I will try again in a few months when she has settled down.
She bonded with Diego very quickly.. (as in they were together for 3 days and they were in love) so I'm thinking she is not ready to accept another rabbit yet.

Anyway, after that happened I felt really sorry for the baby so I called the breeder and asked about the other babies in the litter. We decided to pay for her sister to keep her company and picked her up straight away as well (I didn't want to risk them forgetting about each other by waiting too long)

We let the babies run around our dining room and we just sit to one side and see what they do... every time they come out for a run they get closer and closer to us and they are eating like little troopers... Dora eats hay but not as much as these guys!

We have taken Doras old double storey hutch and made it bigger so she is going to live in that and the twins are going to have the bigger pen.
I'll keep the hutches next to each other so they can get used to each other.
They are next to each other now and Dora has calmed down a lot... she pretty much ignores them now so that's a good sign. She still runs up to the wire if they are near it but she doesn't bite it anymore... I have bombarded her with toys to help with that though! Lol

Sorry for the novel... I posted most of this on another thread that I thought you would see but I can't remember which one it was!

Alty

How did I not get a notification that you posted? Wow.

Shaz, how old are the new bunnies? I'm assuming that they aren't fixed?

If they aren't fixed remember that they will hit sexual maturity at 6 months of age. If they've reached that point already then Dora can smell it and that's probably what's causing her aggressiveness.

Also, although most people don't believe it, bunny's do get depressed if they lose someone they love. Dora was bonded to Diego, and it happened really quickly. It doesn't matter if they were together for 2 days or 2 years, they were a pair and she misses him.

She may not be ready to accept another bunny into her life right now.

There's no hurry, you can bond them later. I'd wait until the twins are fixed and Dora has a bit of time to heal her little heart. Poor dear. Give her extra love and kisses, she needs them right now, and they're good for you too. :)

shazamataz
May 28, 2009, 10:05 AM
Thanks for replying :)

I was thinking that she misses him, I just didn't realise that they could get attached so quickly. I haven't had rabbits together since I was little so the bonding process is pretty much all new to me.

Yep, I'm giving her lots of extra attention, The dogs aren't used to the new bunnies yet and they still pounce at the cage so they have to be locked in the bedroom when they come out to play. But Dora is used to them and doesn't flinch so I move her pen into the lounge twice a day for an hour or so... plus I go out into the laundry a lot to see all 3 of them.
I just have to put down a vinyl table cloth when I leave Dora in the lounge so she doesn't stain the floorboards.

It probably sounds silly but with Dora, every night before bed I rub her cheek until she goes to sleep then tip toe out the room :o I feel like a proud mother.

The babies are only 9 weeks old so nope, no spaying yet.
We wouldn't be able to afford to spay them for a few months anyway so it worked out well.

Aw, 9 weeks old, they're really just babies.

Sounds to me like Dora is smelling their mom on them and it's making her protective of her space. If you think about it it makes sense. They're babies, they smell like the litter they came from and their mom. The mom just gave birth 9 weeks ago so she has a very specific scent and it can make other females (even fixed females) aggressive and territorial.

Poor little Dora, I just want to hug her. I think that she'd proabably get along great with Kilala, sounds like they both have attitude. :)

It sounds like you've got it all under control. Let Dora be around them (without contact) as much as possible. Sniffing distance, nose touching, getting used to eachothers scent.

I would wait until the babies are fixed before really bonding them with Dora, but play it by ear.

If Dora calms down, doesn't lunge at them or show aggression you can start having a few play sessions. One at a time, not both babies and Dora, otherwise bad things can happen.

Eventually, once they're individually bonded with Dora, you can place all of them together.

Make sure that Vaughn is with you when all three bunnies are together, you'll need the extra hands just in case you have to break up a fight.

Can't wait for more pictures. :)

Thanks, I never thought about their mothers smell being on them, good point.
When we picked them up they were in a separate enclosure... she keeps her bunnies in a big wooden barn, the whole floor was hay, it was really nice. She had quite a few bunnies (Maybe 10 that I saw plus a few babies) but they were all looked after really well and she said she doesn't breed one rabbit more than twice. (I'm assuming that is an acceptable number, I know it's right for dogs!)

Do you think Dora will calm down any more? The vet said that it should take around a month to see a change if there is going to be one... She has always been pretty spunky, she bit me the other day because I was sitting in her pen holding a piece of celery while she eat it and Vaughn started talking to me and I half turned around... I was holding the celery just out of reach so she bit me on the knee!

More pictures will be coming soon.
I walked into the laundry today with some food and they hopped up to the wire, when I leaned over to put the food in they darted off, but it's an improvement!

Handle the babies as much as possible. Also, get a litter box, they're the perfect age to train.

We got Cotton at 4 weeks. Way too young to be taken away from mom. I complained to the pet store. Since then they don't get bunnies younger then 8 weeks old.

Cotton is the tamest of my bunnies, largely because we got him as a baby. The others were all over a year old when we got them. Kilala was 1 1/2. Oreo, don't know her age, I'm guessing around 5 years old. Oreo, don't know, I'm guessing around 6. Cotton is now 2years old. :)

Give Dora some time. The surgery and the loss of her buddy is a lot to handle. I'm not surprised that she's a bit out of sorts. Time heals all wounds, both the physical and the emotional. ;)

Kilala will bite too if she's not getting your attention.

It would be funny to see Dora and Kilala together. Two stubborn girls. :)

At the moment we have been making a point of picking them up as much as possible without stressing them out (about 4-5 times a day) They hate it... Rikku is not as bad as Lulu. Lulu shows the whites of her eyes and pulls her ears back even when I hold her close and put my hand beside her head.
I hope she gets used to it.. if not I will have another bunny like Dora... you can hold her for about 5-10 seconds before she starts squirming.

I'd love to see Dora and Kilala together, I can imagine if they got along... they would somehoew concoct a master plan to escape from their cage and then chew the house to pieces... then they would dig and tear up every inch of carpet they could find.
Sometimes at the building salvage in town they have odd colored carpet squares for sale, I usually throw one in for Dora and Jack until they get tattered, then replace them.
I ran out a while ago so I'll have to hunt down some more... Another quirky thing Dora does is that she refuses to sleep in her sleeping box... she thinks it's her toilet. So I guess I was half lucky to have a toilet trained rabbit!
Her 2 story hutch has the ramp that leads to the top then a little flat area before the sleeping box. She wees in the box and sleeps where the ramp connects

I may need some toilet training tips!

I honestly haven't really bothered before :o Dora was just naturally fairly clean and went in the box, jack goes wherever he pleases but we move his hutch every 2 days... the babies back up against to wall to wee (which seeps under the lino  )and they also poop and wee in their bed.

Just get a litter box, fill it with litter (I use cat litter) pick up some of their poo and put it in the box.

Put the box in the corner that they use most often.

I have a corner litter box made especially for rabbits.

Rabbits are naturally clean animals, don't like mess. They're really not hard to train. Well, most of them. KILALA! ;)

Darn bits of brocolli fuzz!
It doesn't sweep up, it just sticks!

I was nearly ready to throw the broom across the room when the dogs came over and licked it off the floor

Does anyone know what age a mini lops ears should drop?
These are my first minis and my dwarfs have usually dropped by now... hmmm...

RANDOM BUNNY UPDATE

Well... today was an interesting day.
I woke up late and stumbled out to our shed/garage where my partner was with one of his friends who had come over.
They had taken his project car in there and were about to fibreglasg the interior of it... WITH MY RABBIT IN THE SHED

I was furious, if they had have started lord knows what the fumes would have done to her.
She is now safely back in the laundry.

I can't wait until we get this darn indoor enclosure built, it's driving my insane having pens everywhere on the floor, I can't get to my washing machine now!

Hi HS Dimple.
What sort of bunny would you like to get?

Here is a couple more snaps of mine and some great news!

Previously Dora (The big fawn rabbit) hated my new babies (The two black and white ones) she tried to bite them so I could not have them together.
They have been separated for a month now and I tried to re-introduce them. Last night they slept in cages next to each other and this afternoon I let them run around my dining room...
No fights!
I am so happy, they might be able to all be together after all!

Gave eight babies to my hubbys mother (the ones that were around half grown) but more babies keep appearing lol.

Wow I'm glad they didn't start fiberglassing.. I would have been furious too..

I love bunnies so much but I doubt my hubby would let me get one right now.. he's going to have a handful when I go to college as is.. *four chinchillas, the countless fish, and the dog*

You can never have too many furry babies (and slippery ones) lol

Some bad news maybe... We let the bunnies run around together again and Dora chased one of the babies, we ended the session there and will try again tomorrow. She wasn't trying to bite, just chase so I don't know what to make of it

Didn't know where to put this so I'm sticking it here :)

This is our new indoor rabbit run...
Dimensions are
60cm deep
200cm long
60cm high (each section)

Spent hours lining the darn with out with lino so it was easy to clean.
Also bought a small (but broken) pet carrier cheap so the babies up top have a hiding box.
And Dora has the same down the bottom.

It doesn't look the best at the moment but we are putting fancy wood over the front of it so it looks all pretty.

Anyhoo...
1st pic, my partner and his mate putting it together (my other half is in the black top)
2nd pic, the basic frame.
3rd pic... Finito!

Shaz.... but dont they chew on the plastic? i know if i had plastic in with my chins they would chew it i assumed bunnies were the same way

The plastic litter trays? No they don't touch them...

The lino has had pine put all around the edges of it... the bunnies will chew the pine but it's easy to replace.

They will chew anything made of wood :D That's why I made the pine strips replacable! But they have never chewed plastic... they both love digging the litter boxes though!
I need to put something rough in there so hopefully they will run on it and I won't have to cut their darn nails...
Haven't had to do the babies yet but Dora is scary, I literally have to wrap her in a towel with one leg poking out so she doesn't claw me to death.
Jack is a good boy, you just hold him on his back and you can do pretty much anything to him, only bunny I know that will go to sleep while having a tummy rub, all the others hate it.

Ok, just for Shazzy and Alty... this is the baby bunny that I was talking about and the situation that happened with my son on Saturday, turns out the Momma Bunny didn't abandon the baby.

When I was out on the grill, I saw the baby, came in for my camara and the baby bunnies had duplicated to two. While I was photographing the two baby bunnies... guess who should come hopping around the corner, but a big ole Momma Bunny! On my last trip out to get photos, Momma was feeding the babies, that turns out to be three. :)

BTW, just so you know, my son just commented that if you read this whole passage, "That you guys need a life!"... oh the fun of a twelve year old boy. He will not make it to thirteen at this rate.

Lucky you.

We live in the burbs, there are too many cats and dogs around here for bunnies to make their homes near us.

We have the odd Jackrabbit stopping by, but never for long.

That's okay though, I have my own bunnies to watch. In fact, one of them just tooted.

Grr I just typed out a huge message and hit a wrong button and deleted it... now I have to remember what I said

I have good news and bad news... The twins have found a new home.
It is good and bad..
Bad because I will miss them terribly...
Good because the person taking them can afford to get them spayed and will definitely love them!

The person who took them is my cousin, she said a while back that she loved them and was interested in taking them, Alty gave me some great advice on how to try and tame them a bit more... it did work to a degree but they were still very, very skittish and need spaying to help them further (something we couldn't afford)

I feel bad but I will still be seeing them on holidays when we go down south the visit and they are better off where they are now (free run of the house more often! Woohoo!) :)

Now... the other reason I am posting this is to share the new bunny run we have been building...
We knew she was taking them on the weekend and we came to the realisation that the huge run we had built for 3 rabbits was going to be WAY too big for the 1 we now have...

We had a look in pet stores for indoor cages but for one big enough for Dora was $260.00

We decided to make our own! So far it has cost us $00.00

The metal came from my partners mothers - left over from when they built her deck
The wire came from my parents - Left over from their dog runs.

My partner already had a welder and a grinder.

We banged it all together and the picture bewlow is what we got!

All I have to do now is add a plastic tray! (worked out it will cost about $10.00)

Oh and here's a baby photo of Dora from about 2 years ago to keep with the cute bunny theme :p
