I am a US citizen, my wife and daughter are German citizens. We live near Chicago, Illinois. They both hold green cards as pertinent residents. My wife wants to travel back to Germany for her daughters wedding on July 4, 2009. She has only the original passport she came with. As there are new passport requirements, can she travel on her old passport? If not, is there a way to get the passport updated to the new "chip enabled" passport quickly, or can we go to the German Consulate in Chicago and get a temporary passport letter to allow her to travel for the wedding?
