Hi everyone! I am in a pickle with our landlord. We live in a coporate apartment complex. We have a dog and have had one since we moved in two years ago. When we moved in we signed a pet adendum and put a dog security deposit down. The adendum state you can not leave your dog out on a leash if you are OFF the PROPERTY. We (like everyone else who lives here with a dog) put the dog out a few times a day on her leash. She does NOT bark or bother any of the neighbors. We live next to the leasing office and there is a new manager who keeps harassing us about putting her out. She keeps sending us notices to "refer to the pet adendum". We have done so and we are following the rules. So on Friday I came out of my bedroom to see her pulling my dog to the steak in the ground and then she wraped her leash around it giving her very little space. I went out to ask her what she was doing and she walked away. I went to the police station to make a report and the officers went over the township ordance with me and told me we are completely within our rights and if she did it aging to call them. We put a report into the reginal manager of the complex as well about her pulling the dog. They told us they were making a new adendum which states we have to supervise our animals at all times. Do we have to sign this? We are not up for renewal and I don't think its fair I have to sit with my dog 24/7. I should add that her leash is not very long and it does not give her enough room to travel to anyone else's porch area. Thank you in advance!! Judy Kay, can you reply please...

You have no obligation to sign anything they put in front of you until your current lease has expired. They have to honor the existing lease until it runs out.
Of course they can make new rules and require that you sign a new addendum when your lease runs out. If this manager is that much of a problem you may want to start looking for a new place to live when this lease expires.

Let me get this straight. You let the dog out on a long thether that does not allow the dog to go beyond the boundaries of your property. Yet a manager came onto your property and grabbed the dog and tied her to a stake shortening the tether?
Under those circumstances the manager was out of line. However, the complex is NOT out of line to put further restrictions on pets.
You do not have to sign the addendum until renewal time, but they canb refuse to renew if you don't sign.

Yeah, that's it in a nut shell. My dogs leash is more than 5ft. But less than 10ft. The way the property is set up where our apartment is she can't reach anyone's else's space but she still thought it appropriate to shorten it to about 1ft. I had a post on here not to long ago about my boyfriend and as soon as I solve that problem another one arises!! I can't win! Lol. But we are looking to move at the end of this lease, we need a fresh start!

... pulling my dog to the steak in the ground ...
Did the dog eat the steak? :)
FYI, a leash is hooked to the dog on one end and held in your hand on the other end. I think what you mean is a rope or chain, or as another answer puts it, a "tether".
They are right, BTW, you don't have to sign the addendum.

Lol... her actual LEASH is tied to the "METAL SPIKE" that it is in the ground... which also gives you an idea of how long it is. It is a plain leash with no retractable handle...
