Is the Linux kernel open source? I heard on NPR today that Linus Torvalds is the only person who has access to the source code of the kernel.

The linux kernel is fully open source, distributed under the GNU GPL (http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html).
You can download the full kernel source from here (http://www.kernel.org). :)
What is this "NPR" that you refer to?
