The a/c cuts on and the fan won't spin. If I help it along with a stick going clockwise the house will cool but the a/c won't turn off. If I spin it counterclockwise it blows hot- which way should the fan on the unit outside be spinning? I replaced the run capacitor and I believe the other piece is called a definite purpose contactor. What else could it be? My #1 question is which way should the fan on the unit outside be spinning? Thanks for the help.

OK, first of all, the fan should be spinning so that the air flows up. Second, the air should be warm if it is in the cooling mode. If the fan is not turning off, then make sure you have it wired on the load side of the contactor. If you have it wired right (refer to schematic), then you may have a bad defrost board if it's a heat pump.

What brand unit do you have?

Does the compressor shut off and the fan keep running or the whole thing is still running compressor and fan?
