A friend of mine has a pom and has trained it to use the kitty litter box. My question is this is this OK to do with a dog?

As long as they're not eating the litter it should be fine. I've heard that it is rather difficult to teach them to go in a box.

Megan is right.
Make sure you get a completely organic litter in case they do ingest any while you are training.
You can train puppies to go on paper or pads so I can't see why you couldn't train one to a litter box.
You will however probably need a bigger litter box than a normal cat one and watch out for digging :)

My friend got the dog from the dog pound, and the Pom is an older dog. I just never heard of using a litter box. She usees it because he doesn't like to get his feet wet in the morning, and he does not like dirty feet either so he doesn't dig. She got very lucky with him.

She did! Would be great not to have to pick dog poop off the lawn.
Usually I just run over it with the lawn mower :o

I know about the lawn mower thing I uaually step in it, because I missed a pile. The main thing she has had a problem with is he pee's on everything new that belongs to her, is he just marking territory or what? She has tried everything to get him to stop. The carpet and upostestry cleaner person she uses, has taken to calling her to find out if she needs anything cleaned.

Lol.
If it is only new things and he pees on them once then doesn't do it again then it is definitely marking.
Having them neutered usually stops that behaviour :)

That's the problem he is neutered. Her vet said that he should have stopped by now. I quess he doesn't like her husband, because he just peed on his side of the bed. Maybe he is trying to tell her husband to stay away. LOL

Possibly! Dogs can get rather clingy with a particular person so he could very well be jealous of her husband!

I don't know the situation but perhaps you could suggest to them that the husband pays more attention than her for a while, get him to take the dog for walks and do a little bonding with it. Get her to pay the dog a little less attention for a while.
