My home is cooled via a 2.5 ton Rheem Classic X air with natural gas furnace. Unit installed when home built 14 years ago. The last three years the A/C has displayed different problems. Leaking coolant resulting in recharge of 1.5 lbs, 2 lbs, and 3 lbs the last three years. Last year the Rheem air handler began to stop blowing from time to time. At first the tech stated the problem was due to low coolant. Upon further investigation, he stated the fan motor capacitor was going bad. Changed the capacitor and unit ran great remainder of season. This year we are experiencing a new problem-again with sporadic air flow. Unit will cool for several hours and slowly build up ice on lineset. Eventually the fan will stop working when air is on and fan is in auto. Once turned to "On" fan works great. We have inspected the a-coil to find no visible signs of oil splatter. We did notice the coil condensation drip pan to be a bit full and corrected problem by adjusting drain line pitch. No dirt on coil. Exterior compressor appears to be working beautifully and continues to run with air handler stops. System recharged several weeks ago and worked for two hours only to display this problem. Unit sat stagnant for three weeks until this evening. Temp dropped inside house 4 degrees in just under 2 hours. Anyone with an idea or suggestion? Tech's can not locate leak in system so we suspect leak is hidden behind exterior wall. Thank you for your time!
