When I open msconfig or regedit, the applications run for a few seconds then automatically close (in the admin account). They run OK if I boot into safe mode. Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

Sounds like you got hit with the Blaster Worm. To make sure, go to: http://sarc.com/ Scroll down and click on,"Free Online Virus and Security Check" Write down exactly anything it finds, then return to: http://sarc.com/ and do a search for what was found. Symantec usually has a removal tool and/or directions for manually removing.
