Our grand daughter is 6 months and 3 weeks and does not crawl or even try. What she does is lay on her back and arch her back and scoot on the top of her head. It looks painful. Has any one seen this with their child? If so, how long before they got the idea to crawl?

Some kids take a while. Try encouraging her by placing her favorite toys in front of her.
Give her more tummy time and sit her up to give her a different view.
It's getting pretty warm outside so why not get a blankie and go outside with her. I'm sure she'll love that.
Encouragement, consistency and patience is key.

A lot of children don't crawl, they will go from rolling to pulling up to walking.
If you are concerned, you could ask your grandchild's pediatrician, but I think it's within normal developments.
If the scooting that she is doing with her head was painful to her, she would find a new way to travel.
Is she rolling?

My oldest son tried to crawl one time and fell on his face. Apparently it was very painful because he refused to ever attempt it again. Instead he would scooch across the floor on his bottom. It took forever for him to get anywhere but he was fine with it. He went straight to walking.

Every child crawls/walks at different stages. As Justwantfair said, it's still within the normal range. My son was about 7-8 months when he began crawling.
Keep in mind crawling is a learned skill so it is something that she will have to figure out.

I just read your post from last April. My granddaughter is doing exactly the same thing. Read what I posted today and tell me how your graddaughter is doing now.

Davenalor, this is libra 221. This is my first time using this site and I don't think I did it right. I was trying to respond to your April 29 post. My granddaughter also locomotes in exactly that same way as yours. She flips over to her back, arches, pushes off with her feet, and scoots on the top of her head. She can crawl for short distances on her belly, but she clearly prefers this mode. How is your granddaughter doing now - three months later?
